Kanye West is a force of nature. Sweeping violently across the globe, he tears rural villages from the ground, leaving their inhabitants in a dazed trance chanting “Yeezus, Yeezus, Yeezus…”. He moves through society like a tidal wave, decimating the outdated, the irrelevant and anything else that stands in his way of becoming the most renown human being on the planet. Kanye is a profoundly influential figure in not only the music industry, but in almost every corner of pop culture. His influence is evident in the many artists who draw inspiration from his music: B.o.B, Kid Cudi, Childish Gambino, Frank Ocean, The Weeknd, Wale, and Drake. Kanye has also left his magic touch on the work of artists such as Jay-Z, Talib Kweli, Mos Def, Beyoncé, Common, Lupe Fiasco, John Legend, Nas, Scarface, T.I., Lil Wayne, Janet Jackson, and Alicia Keys.

Kanye’s passion is boundless. When he talks about his creative goals, there is a desperate, ravenous fervor in the tone of his voice that gives away his insatiable desire to succeed. Kanye has shamelessly compared himself to Steve Jobs, Michelangelo and Picasso. He has called himself the nucleus of culture. He has called himself a god. Kanye’s voracious intensity and drive go unparalleled by any of his contemporaries. The quality that so closely relates Kanye to a ferocious tropical storm is also evident whenever he opens his gold adorned mouth, whether it be to rap, to criticize fashion, or to scream profanities at the paparazzi. Much like Mother Nature, Kanye says and does exactly what he wants- and there is very little that us mere mortals can do to stop him. Even though some may claim that he is ridiculous, pompous or clinically insane, Kanye has the power to do whatever he feels is right for his artistic endeavours and still maintain a huge fanbase. Kanye West has reminded us what it means to shape society with the power of art. His creative impact will endure long after he is gone, just as nature will endure.

Kanye West is one of the most influential artists, and has successfully maintained that influence through innovation and perseverance.  Kanye West entered the industry in a time where in hip-hop it was considered essential to have a street image and be able to be seen as having street credibility. In a billboard article covering the 10 year anniversary of “The College Dropout” Devo Springsteen is quoted as saying “There was not really interest in Kanye. People liked his beats but they saw hip-hop as 50 Cent, Ja Rule, streets and if he didn’t fit into that perception then he wasn’t really hip-hop.”.  Kanye would eventually stick to his vision, due to how he felt after the accident that inspired his first single “Through the Wire” as mentioned in the article by No I.D. The impact of the “The College Dropout” was felt right away, J Ivy was quoted in the same article as saying “The album got people through school, through depression, through death in the family, through relationships, through bad jobs, through career decisions – the album changed lives... It called forth a huge ripple effect.” Kanye’s success would go on to indicate a major change in direction for hip-hop when his album “Graduation” outsold 50 Cent’s “Curtis” which paved the way for artists who did not fit into that gangster persona. He would also influence a new wave of artists with his experimental album “808s and Heartbreak” such as; Drake, Kid Cudi, Lupe Fiasco, Frank Ocean, The Weeknd. and Childish Gambino. Kanye’s success and influence brings an important idea to artists and society in general that so long as you stay true to your vision, you don’t need to stay within the norm and that there is a place for those who choose to be innovators and follow their vision.

Kanye West is an entity who epitomizes everything that is wrong with American culture today,and makes a lot of money doing so.

Mr. West was born in 1977 in Atlanta Georgia. He grew up listening to bands like the Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd. At a young age, Kanye knew that he wanted a career in music and began to write songs greatly inspired by the death of his mother. Little Kanye preferred rock music over hip-hop and was enamored with the education themed studio albums of Bob Dylan and Johnny Cash. He went on in his career to work with Jay-Z, Alicia Keys and Janet Jackson (to name a few) and win 21 Grammys. He is one of the best-selling and most awarded artists in popular music, the same man who calls himself Yeezus, refers to everything he's ever done as "the best", and posed on "Rolling Stone" wearing a crown of thorns. He goes to show that the music industry no longer requires talent. One can write songs about nothing in particular, buy a beat from somebody and sing through layers of auto-tune and print money for themselves. President Barack Obama openly referred to Kanye as a Jackass after Kanye said that Kim Kardashian looks better in a bikini than Michelle Obama. What this means to society is that it is more than encouraged to be a jerk (to the president and his wife none-the-less). www.straight.com says "West has repeatedly shown himself to be that guy who gets belligerently bombed at the house party and then spends the next day phoning everyone to apologize." I believe that they are alluding to the time when Kanye interrupted Taylor Swift and ensured that Lady GaGa would no longer tour with him.

To be fair, he has a very successful career in both the music and fashion industry. But we as a nation are feeding this mans insanity and not many people seem to be against this.

     Kanye West is arguably one of the most influential and well-known artists today.  Whether it’s through his iconic style, diverse ranges of music, or his arrogant attitude, Kanye West never fails to make an impression and leave his mark.      Kanye West’s style has changed significantly throughout the years.  Billboard’s Kanye West’s Fashion Evolution slideshow summarizes the progression of Kanye’s style from when the artist first hit the scene as a Roc-A-Fella Records producer to Paris Fashion Week.  The self-proclaimed “Louis Vuitton Don” “has traded in the polo shirts and bowties for grey t-shirts and leather.”  Kanye has not only matured aesthetically and altered his style, but he has taken on the role as designer as well.  According to MTV, Kanye’s designs for French brand A.P.C. at Paris Fashion Week included “double-denim looks, flag-like capes, and moody zipper-stitched parkas.  For every dark look, there was a suited counterpart, styled with glasses and jackets worn as capes."      In an interview with Philly radio station Power99, Kanye West discusses the progression of his music and how he had to change himself in order to achieve the sound that he wanted.  For example, he had to regress to “a five-year-old’s level of expression” in order to create 808s & Heartbreak.  When Kanye wrote My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy he matured to the level of a nine-year-old.  “I can deliver perfection but I choose to deliver things that are not perfect on purpose sometimes just to challenge the listeners, challenge myself, and see what we can create from this,” he said in the interview.  Kanye’s method of music diversity not only reaches out to a greater realm of people, but keeps his audience intrigued and wondering what he’s going to create next.  Although his cocky, overconfidence may get the best of him sometimes, Kanye shines in society as one of the most influential and creative artists of the time.
