It’s always two things with me.
1. As I finished thumb-typing my confessional nonsense last night, I noticed a bald face hornet on my shin. She was just a small thing with the promise of pain, but I know I live with someone who has a very real fear of my pals, the insects. I called out, “Unlock and open the front door and hide in the bathroom.” I knew exactly how scary this would sound, but I thought it was better than the effects of a wild panic. Because I wasn’t clear enough, of course we had to talk quickly first. Future me knows there were better words, but as I was slowly walking to the front door with this explorer climbing up my thigh to the loose gap at the bottom of my underwear, I felt I was making the best of it. By the time I was outside, my potentially painful pal had breached the containment zone by just a little bit. I ran around and danced like a sodden reveler, and she flew away into the night.
2. I was thinking about “Last Night” by The Strokes today. All my friends hated that band, but my life-companion and her friend, Kristin, spent so many nights dancing in their pajamas and showing me new music, that I could never feel what my friends felt. I love my friends, but they also never told me about “Common People.”
