Hello! What advice would you have for someone who wants to learn Kpop dances, but is really shy about dancing? How do you learn your dances? And what are some good dances to learn for an absolute beginner? Thank you so much!
At first, I was wondering why anyone would ask me for dancing advice since I’m not really that good, but then I figured that would be a good piece of advice in itself. Don’t be too self-conscious. Dance because you love it or because it’s something you want to do, and don’t worry about how you look. Which is a lot harder than it sounds, I know. T-T Don’t be too strict with yourself, either. You didn’t train for years and years, so you won’t look exactly like idols who have years and years of experience. Instead, try to have fun with it! Do it because you resolved to do it, because it’s fun or good exercise, don’t worry about how you look. ^^
As for how I learn dances, I think it varies a lot with the dance. One way I do it is I watch the dance over and over, so I can hit the timing well. Another way is by using tutorials. Sometimes, I like to use like these, which only have the counts added behind them, but a lot of the time I find it more helpful to use this kind, which not only has counts but also has someone actively teaching the dance and saying “So you’re going to swing your arms and you’re going to move your leg like this at the same time” because an actual description is sometimes easier to make the moves cleaner. Also! Another good thing to do while you learn dances is watch covers! One good thing about covers is that you can see actual people who don’t necessarily learn dances as a profession doing the dance, and it clears up a lot of moves that idols sometimes just brush past without any trouble! Some of my favorite cover channels are Lisa Rhee, East2West, and Jellybeannose, but a lot of the time I’ll just look up covers for the dance I want to learn and watch random ones! (Also, this is out of nowhere, but a fun thing to do is covering a kpop dance with hardly any knowledge of it at all, just watching the video. My sisters and I do it whenever I can drag them into it and it’s really fun. Here’s another channel that does it too.) Also, sadly because I live in the midsouth, there’s absolutely no options here, but if you live somewhere that you can join a cover group, I would definitely recommend it. Even if you’re really shy about your dancing, it can be fun to have friends to do it with and you can learn a lot from other people!
For easy dances, it’s a little difficult because everyone is good at something else, but I find some cute concept girl group dances to be easiest for me because there’s a lot less intense movements! Some easy ones I would recommend would be Cheer Up, A-ing, LUV, Oh!, Lionheart, and Gee. Some other fun dances I found easy are Shake It, A (which might be a little harder if you have problems with jumping), Adore U, and How People Move.
Oh! I forgot one last resource. 1TheK has a series called Let’s Dance, where the idols come on and teach point movements! It’s really simple and it can help a lot, so if you’re learning a dance that has been featured be sure to look it up!
Probably the best advice I can give is just to have fun, though, because personally I’m not good at dancing and I do it because I enjoy it and I want to be better. I started a dance cover channel I started because I wanted to see my self improvement, but I really haven’t shared it with many people because I still feel a little self-conscious, and I only uploaded one video because I got injured and then really busy with work. But since I’m encouraging someone else to just have fun and not care what other people think, I have to put feet to my words now so here’s my channel. You can watch my one (really horrible) cover that I put up and now that I have more free time since I quit my job hopefully soon I’ll be putting up more (if I can get my computer to cooperate with my camera!) and getting better and better. I hope you have lots of fun dancing and we can get better and enjoy it together!
