BANAL was first used as a word in 1825. So in 1825 people started noticing that things were getting a little boring. But also in 1825 came around the word TOFFEE, so things couldn't have been that boring if people started boiling sugar and butter together to make candy. Yam! Toffee is certainly not banal. At the same time they came up with the word SIZING, so finally there was no more one size fits all, now clothes came in many sizes. But they also came up with the word UNAFFORDABLE which tells me that not everyone could afford to buy clothes or toffee. In fact they came up with another word, STARVATION WAGES, which tells me that 1825 was a really bad year for most people. The word SLUM comes from this time also. And so does LICKSPITTLE which is the precursor of BROWN-NOSER. I actually like the evolution of this word: currying favor started with the licking of spit in 1825 and later on in the 20th century the brownnoser ends up with the nose in someone's ass. It looks like times are getting harder. You really must get down on your knees to get a powerful person to grant you a favor. Oh, but wait, 1825 is the year when the word EGOMANIA was first used. I wonder who was the first egomaniac. I couldn't find anything about it. And also in the same year they came up with the word MALODOR. That's when people realized other people smell bad. And we have to thank 1825 for bringing us one of the tastiest words out there: PIZZA. So 1825 might have been a year that made people think of BANAL but they came up with PIZZA!!!
