back on my bs. fight club as a piece of absurdist media goes insanely hard precisely because narrator and tyler embody existentialism and nihilism quite well
i have literally judt finished my ap lit absurdism unit in which we studied rosencrantz and guildenstern are dead and i can see The Parallels
narrator embodies existentialism like guildenstern. tyler is nihilism like rosencrantz. together they make up a duo of characters whose plurality is under question (an inherently very interesting idea to explore!!) AND they spend their time together questioning everything and doing stupid shit (an inherently funny idea to explore)
both pieces of media are about how life is arbitrary. there’s no objective truth to society—to credit, for one, but also to the morals of very royal drama in r&g
this is all to say that part of me really wants to go through and do a very very deep dive character analysis of fight club because the characterization through the visual medium of film was actually really good!! the lighting was amazing and stood out to me and i liked how they changed how they treated filming narrator vs tyler to really compare and contrast them against each other
another thing is that fight club is much more accessible as absurdist literature than r&g is because it has a very clear plot and lots of action! this is very exciting because it incorporates a lot of absurdism INTO its plot but you still get the benefits of having a plot and the fun stuff of absurdism at the same time!!!
i hope you all can forgive me for going on a huge rant about fight club at two in the morning. this is the end of my film bro era i promise if this ends up as a hfx i apologize in advance to my friends
also as another note. i really hate violence so the fact that i enjoyed this movie this much says a lot ;-; maybe enjoyed is a strong word but there were definitely very fun elements to it that make it enjoyable to analyze (the absurdism)
