Sherlock doesn't want "strings attached" with a flatmate, but then John starts saying things like "Brilliant!" and "Amazing!" instead of the usual "Piss off!"  

Sherlock is terrified of letting go of his prickly, sociopath persona and letting someone else inside, but he can't help the feelings that are growing for John.  Nobody has ever loved him or appreciated him like this before.  

So he makes the conscious decision to tone down the snark, at least around John.  It's not always successful, but, he's trying.  Because John could love him...
