It was such a simple statement and yet Tuki felt like the rug was pulled out from under him. The words were so bittersweet. A child missing his mother and wanting a connection to his father.
Damn Penny, Tuki thought. It was second nature to respond with some self deprecating joke. But Dane wouldn’t realize it. He’d just think his Uncle Tutu was bad mouthing the father he never met.
It was also a reminder that Tuki needed to fix things with more than just Adi. He needed to tell Dane the truth, but first he needed to speak to someone else. That would have to come later though.
The merman wrapped an arm around the boy and pulled him into his side. “If you ask me, I think you got it from your momma.” He kissed the top of his head, and sighed, slowly pulling away.
“Look here,” he said, lightly pushing at the boy’s chin until he looked up. “I’ll be straight with you. I’ve screwed up a lot in the past and I’m going to do my best to fix things. I promise you this though, no matter what, I’ll always be here for you.”
One day soon, I promise to tell you everything and hopefully you’ll forgive me.
That couldn’t go any worse, could it? Tuki thought as he sat by the pool. After Adi had left with James, the merman had escaped outside and into the water. It might not be the ocean, but being in the water centered him. It cleared away all the tension and helped him to think.
Right now, front and center was his next move. He knew that it was going to take more than a simple bunch of flowers to fix all his mistakes. Okay, maybe a small part of him had hoped it would be that easy, but he knew that would be a slim chance. So... did he wait for Adi to approach him? Was the metaphorical ball in his court? Or did Tuki try again and express his feelings?
“It’ll be okay, Uncle Tutu. He’ll be back and then you can try again.”
The older man looked up and saw Dane standing off to his side. A small reassuring smile crossed the small boy’s face. Tuki chuckled and shook his head. Dane truly was Penny’s child. His heart so full of love and compassion. It was hard to remember he was only eight.
The young boy walked over and sat down next to him. The two stared out in front of them and Tuki found himself asking, “You think so?”
Dane quickly nodded his head. “I know so. You just have to tell him you love him and he’ll say it back. Then he’ll break up with James and the two of you can get marry.”
Tuki sighed. He wished he had the same strong belief that Dane seemed to have over the situation. “Dane, I don’t want you to think...”
“Are you saying you don’t love him?”
The merman stuttered but not legitimate words formed. The boy nodded his head as if he had proved his point. There was so much to unravel in all the young boy was saying, but Tuki pushed it to the back burner. Maybe it was a little selfish, but he wanted to hold on to that childish naivete and hope for the best along with Dane.
“How did you get so smart?” he finally asked.
Dane looked away, a little of his smile disappearing. He shrugged before saying, “Momma said I get it from my dad.”
