At the LIRR Bellmore station, Dan Funderburgh’s “SHOAL” celebrates the journey between home and away throughout Long Island, capturing the flow of people and their history. Mosaic ocean waves cover three walls of the station house, featuring buoys and Lenape pottery shards and reference North Atlantic sea life in the Delft pottery style. Miotto Mosaic Art Studio fabricated Funderburgh's elaborate designs emulating hand painted glaze by digitally printing on ceramic tiles and waterjet cutting the forms of native fish and crustaceans. These techniques are a marriage of traditional aesthetics and craft with modern technology and materials.  In addition to original patterns inspired by traditional ceramics, certain tiles also feature local icons such as the historic Bellmore station, Jones Beach water tower, and the nearby marinas.

With all the baking going on in Dan Funderburgh’s new art card, it’s a good time to say happy Pi Day! “Night Kitchen” captures a dreamy kitchenware cityscape. Spot the utensils used by night bakers, line cooks and bodega chefs, who often work to keep New Yorkers fed while the city sleeps. Look for the delectable “Night Kitchen” to appear in subway cars in the coming weeks!

Eureka, it’s a new project!

Dan Funderburgh’s aluminum at Metro-North Railroad’s Fordham Station in the Bronx depict the plants and trees of the nearby New York Botanical Garden and are reminiscent of many Gothic details found in the surrounding architecture of Fordham University. Eureka (2016) is Funderburgh’s homage to Edgar Allan Poe’s 1848 “prose poem” of the same title, written in his cottage in the Bronx, about the origins of the universe. The four rose windows are designed to evoke four botanical “big bangs”: succulents, orchids, bonsai, and cactus.

Tell us about yourself: What’s your name, where are you from and what do you do? My name is Dan Funderburgh and I’m an artist and wallpaper designer in Brooklyn.

What inspires and influences your work? What doesn’t influence my work ?! Lately I’ve been looking at cinder blocks and the work of Louis Henry Sullivan and African textile prints.

Describe your work in 3 words or less. "Ornamental art?"

Name your dream project/client? I’ve always wanted to make a hang glider or maybe the facade of a massive public library.

Whats a fashion trend happening now that you dig? And what’s a trend you wish would just go away? I have no clue. All the trends can stay. God bless.

Tell us something awesome that happened to you recently? Trying to surf. The ocean is literally awesome and very humbling.

A large piece for the New York MTA is being installed this month and I’m really psyched about that. I’m sure I’ll post photos but come by the Bronx and check it out.
