WHY?
'Don't do that you're a girl','Act like a girl', 'Girls are not meant to stay out for too long'. Having heard these statements all my life only in my teenage years did my frustration and anger start to develop. I wondered why? Why can't I do that if I am a girl? Why is it that every time I am round someone's for dinner, only the girls are expected to help with giving out food and drinks (basically the traditional role of a woman)? I do not have a problem in helping my aunties however I fail to understand why the boys are not asked to do the same. Confusing right? Apart from the fact that men and women are biologically different, both genders are equal. So why even in this century do I still experience and witness sexism towards women? When I ask my mother these questions she simply replies with 'it's part of our culture, it has always been that way'. After that answer it is impossible to make her understand.
