Hi okay I’m asking as a cishet who feels she needs to be educated, what do you not like about a cishet saying queer? I was under the impression that queer could be used as a term for LBGT identities (more in reference to sexual orientations I think...?). At the same time I’m aware that it was used as a slur, so is it similar to the n-word in that it should not be used by those not in the LGBT community? I hope I’m not coming off as rude I genuinely want to know so I get this right
it is a slur! so unless you (as a cishet or as an lgbt person) have someone’s explicit permission to refer to them as queer, you probably shouldn’t. in some places it’s more acceptable to refer to the lgbt community as the lgbtq or queer community, so if you live somewhere like that, most lgbt people probably won’t mind too much. i must say though, i live in such a place, but it still grates on my nerves when non-lgbt people use it
i wouldn’t compare it to the n slur but it shouldn’t be used by non-lgbt people, unless, as i said, you have explicit permission.
