     “Oh, did I give you the impression I was here out of kindness? As a favor to you?” 

     It was almost funny enough to make him laugh, but Victor only managed a vaguely amused smile. “I’ll keep to my own company as well, so long as I can briefly share this space until I can go elsewhere.”

      He paused there, smile fading and brow furrowing. And where exactly was this space? Not one of his usual haunts. It had taken a lot of energy for him to appear here, his spirit untethered, but a new location was progress so he couldn’t be upset that the return trip might take a little while longer. His energy was almost entirely depleted, a sad state for a ghost like himself. 

     Now, to see just how far he’d jumped.

     “Where am I, precisely?”

     “That makes me sound special.” 

     His eyes remained downcast, focused—or seemingly focused—on the comic book spread out across the shop’s counter, but the corner of his mouth crept up. When Dylan glanced up, mirth danced in his eyes.

     “Don’t be so glum, love. You’ve got Spooky Cat. And the customers.” He glanced at the door, eyebrows lifting slightly. “When we ‘ave customers, anyway.” When he looked back at Dani, his smile softened. “Maybe that’s not so bad.”

     Frustration coiled in his chest, as hot as anger. He saw it so clearly in his head so why couldn’t he actualize it? Any other day of the week, he could so easily capture his vision. Why not today? 

     His fingers tightened their grip on his pencil. When he heard and felt it start to crack, Glen let go and it rolled across the half-finished drawing . “Damnit.” He scrubbed at his stubbled face, groaning. “I need to step back. Do something else. I need fresh eyes. Or fresh talent.” His laugh was hollow. “This is me, giving myself a pep talk.”

     It was hardly encouraging.

     It wasn’t so difficult to find her. It never was, not for him. He sensed her ghostly presence even before he stepped out from the Shadows. She was on the couch, reclining back, caught up in something on television. Or was it Netflix? A movie? It didn’t matter. 

     “M’back,” he announced, not giving Dani a chance to remove herself from the couch. Instead, Dylan flopped down next to her and stretched out with her.. He nestled his head against her chest, sliding his arms around her immediately. Instantly comfortable, he let out a long sigh. “Don’t you dare move. You’re my new pillow.”

    “Yes, love,” he said, his tone more than mildly exasperated. Living with a ghost had its perks. In Dani’s case, those perks also came with a side of romance, or what passed for romance between a ghost and a demon. And opposite those perks, came the many cons of a dead thing beneath his roof. 

      The con in question was Dani’s ineptitude with machinery and technology, her ghostly energy disrupting rather than helping. While the first several centuries of his existence were devoid of any technological advancement, Dylan had come to rely on it in the 21st century. Perhaps too much. That was more his problem than hers, he knew, but he had no time to be kind about it.. Or care This entire thing baffled and frustrated him and her help was no help at all.

     “Yes, I know,” he went on, waving at her. “But you’re not helpin’. Leave.” And that was it. Short. Curt. Dismissive. He went right on, fiddling with the laptop. “If you want to help, you’ll get outta here.”
