Can’t Let Go by Anathema
Monday, February 15: Anathema, “Pulled Under at 2,000 Metres a Second”
Anathema had not yet fully reinvented their sound by A Natural Disaster, but they were certainly well on their way: “Pulled Under at 2,000 Metres a Second” was one of the sprightlier numbers on that record, but it was still far from the doomdeath of Serenades. At the very least, the three Cavanagh brothers were still interested in rock here, as the track moved with some urgency and the guitars packed a little crunch. But there was also the increasing sense that Anathema had other sounds on the brain, as “Pulled Under at 2,000 Metres a Second” inched towards the space and texture that would define their later work. And that shift would soon enough become permanent, rendering this track one of the last of its kind for the group.
