Cotto-Geale: Good & Terrible 06.06.15
Miguel Cotto stopped Daniel Geale in 4 rounds last night, and while the fight itself was fan friendly, for the second time in his last three fights there was a mismatch of color schemes that was not particularly pleasing to the eye.
Lets quickly discuss Cotto’s set - i thought it was great. He has been mixing in pink a lot recently (Mayweather and Martinez fights as well) and this look was strong.
His trunks were sky blue with a gray waistband (with his MC logo in pink) and pink stripe with white piping along the sides. His gloves were matching blue with gray on the palm. His shoes (we should note that gloves, trunks and shoes are all Everlast) were blue, pink and gray. A great look. What could go wrong?
The problem is that Geale (who’s gear I won’t go into in detail, but was basically a replacement level set of trunks, gloves and shoes - unoffensive but forgettable) was royal blue and red. The worst types of contrasts in sports (in my opinion...and you’re following my tumblr) are different shades of the same color:
And thats what we had last night, except with shades of blue (and the pink/red contrast). Luckily it didn’t last that long.
The weird thing, and I guess this is a coincidence, is that something similar happened to Miguel two fights ago against Delvin Rodriguez in Orlando. He had a great set but wound up wearing nearly an identical look to Rodriguez except that (i) the reds were slightly different shades, (ii) Delvin, like Daniel, went glossy to Cotto’s standard fabric, and (iii) Delvin, like Daniel, went with royal blue to Cotto’s sky blue.
Clearly, the contrast in blues in the Geale fight was greater than the contrast of reds in the Rodriguez fight, but still - bad luck for Cotto. We may have a huge showdown with Canelo to look forward to later this year, so hopefully that will produce a classic fight with classic sets.
