haha so funny story I tried typing this and it deleted EVERYTHING and im really not looking forward to typing these all again anyways here are a few of my smiler headcanons!! (Mostly backstory/what happens in the future stuff)

Trish/Dan:

• they're dating... oooooh

• after the part 4 ending, trish was able to snap out of her correction-infused daze (which left her traumatized) and was now terrified of the smiler and anything to do with it. she trashed the project despite dan not wanting her to

• dan tried to find more info about the ministry and miles (much to trish's displeasure) and got marmalized in the process.

• trish was devistated. she loved dan, but she wasn't sure how the relationship would continue. all dan would talk about is how great correction was and how badly he wants her to do it to, all being really triggering for trish.

• eventually trish gets corrected as well, and both of them live their lovely corrected relationship.

• also this is them 10 years later:

Miles/Dr. Kelman:

• miles is the son of dr kelman

• miles had really angsty teenage years and was really depressed, which really scared kelman

• when miles was in his late teens, kelman tried everything to find away to cure his son's sadness

• it took a while but eventually kelman found the smiler, a god-like creature. the smiler gave kelman much advice and he eventually started the ministry of joy

• miles was the ministry's first victim paitent, and the rest is histroy :D

RECTIFY

rewatch highlights ✨Amantha x Jon edition 💖

season 1 episode 6

Season one Amantha has no filter and is quick to raise her voice. People close to her provide behavioral modulation for her.

Amantha: (to Sheriff Daggett) You self-deluded ass.

Jon: (reprimanding) Amantha!

then, Amantha FOLLOWS SHERIFF DAGGETT SCREAMING AT HIM as he gets into his patrol car.

I have soooo many thoughts on the Amantha x Jon dynamic, stemming from this scene. Probably gonna make a separate post about it.

Amantha faces problems head-on.

Janet: You usually face the gun, Amantha. You always have. Ever since you were a child.

Jon accepts physical touch/intimacy from Amantha (if nothing else). In the apartment scene, her hands are reaching for him before he's even sat down.

Jon attunes to and exercises compassion for others, including his clients. When Daniel shows up at Amantha’s apartment, Jon listens to Daniel without interrupting and tells Daniel what Daniel is experiencing is normal and that Daniel’s experience of the world outside Death Row makes sense.

Jon invites but does not force Daniel into the apartment. Neither does Jon demand an explanation for Daniel’s reluctance to come in. They are sitting on the curb when Amantha gets back.

Having PTSD would not be nearly as isolating and shaming as it is, if everyone in society was like Jon Stern.

Peggy: [joining him in front of a painting] What do you think?

Daniel Holden: What do I think? Well, I think I have looked at this painting for so long in a in a book that somehow my brain has trivialized it. And, uh, now as I stand here in front of the real thing, I feel, if anything, disappointment.

Peggy: Oh, that's too bad.

Daniel Holden: Well, not at the painting itself. More at my brain, I guess.

Peggy: I think the brain's afraid of being in a state of constant wonder. It's for safety reasons or something.

Daniel Holden: I suppose it's inevitable.

Peggy: Usually by the time we're four.

Daniel Holden: Then there's the the issue of great expectations.

Peggy: Something the brain doesn't seem the least bit interested in protecting us from.

Daniel Holden: [chuckles] No.

Peggy: Well, I think we should reinstate wonder, banish expectation.

Daniel Holden: I concur.

Daniel Holden: As I lay in bed last night, I thought about how many people have tried to help me along the way, have helped me, a few of who are no longer alive. Way more people have tried to help me, Jon, than have harmed me. The harm just seems to leave the deeper mark. Anyway, I’ve always felt such guilt that others were wasting their lives on me, that I was a waste, that I was unworthy. But last night, I didn’t feel that guilt, or that I was a waste. I didn’t necessarily feel worthiness, but I did feel a kind of responsibility, I guess. At least a desire to try and not let you all down. And then I felt the smallest flicker of not wanting to let myself down, you know? Because somewhere in all this, I’ve managed at times to fight for myself for some reason, to fight for my life for some reason. And I survived for some reason. And here I am, still, for some reason. And me not knowing that reason doesn’t diminish it or invalidate it or disprove its existence.

Rectify

One little detail I noticed and absolutely loved about the series finale of Sundance's "Rectify" was that the 'R' at the end of the title sequence was finally filled in. Every time the theme song played, the title was depicted with an R that was only ever partially present. But in that final episode, the R was completely there ... symbolizing everyone's chance to be whole again after everything they've been through. And I think that's beautiful :')
