MaXXXine (2024) Review
MaXXXine brings us a glitzy, glossy video nasty for the twenty-first century. #Review
This is Your Life: The Lurking Man
The Lurking Man is a fascinating feminine take on alcoholism – way different from, say, Bukowski’s Barfly or Hunter S. Thompson’s The Rum Diaries. Maritza Brikisak (who cowrote, produces and stars) shows the vulnerable, human side of the affliction, from the perspective of a little girl and a mother. Those are sides to the story of addiction that we don’t often see.
Brikisak brings up the age-old question, too: is alcoholism a disease or a choice? It’s done in a pretty clever way, with a demon we don’t know (until the end) if he’s literal or figurative. Sariel (Daniel Lench) is a creepy, seductive, and eerie fallen angel reminiscent of the angular entity in the famous chess-playing scene of Bergman’s the Seventh Seal. The makeup job and the lighting are fantastic in The Lurking Man, by the way. No this is not a big budget Hollywood film, it’s an indie, but I was really impressed by the visual effects (which are an important part of the story).
The Lurking Man goes through a lot of flashbacks, not unlike other fantasy films that examine the lead characters life (think: Scrooge, or What Dreams May Come), so you have to pay attention. I really liked it!
