I've seen a number of folks compare Heated Rivalry with Queer as Folk in terms of the explicit gay sex in a tv series, and that makes sense.
Something else interesting though is a difference in expected audiences. I read an interview with Jacob Tierney where he was emphasizing how aware he was that straight women are a big demographic that read the novel and will thus be interested in the series . Meanwhile, back in the early 2000s, there was an interview with Daniel Lipman and Ron Cowen (who wrote the U.S. QaF), where they were expressing such surprise that their series about gay men was being watched by straight women.
I just find that juxtaposition interesting.
