#ImperialismSoFragile
Was doing my weekly introductory walking tour with the new students on Monday. Take a stroll through Dublin. Point out the places to shop, drink and eat, give a bit of culture and history for the landmarks we pass. One of those being the big fuck off statue of Daniel O'Connell on O'Connell St. So I go into my spiel about “the Liberator” and his fight for Catholic Emancipation in the UK and Ireland.
And I got the filthiest looks from a group of English tourists who were taking pics of the statue. Glaring at me harder and harder with every word I spoke about the British government’s persecution of the Irish.
Sorry Quentin, but it’s literally impossible to discuss Irish history 12thC. - 1922 and have you come out sounding like the good guys…can’t be done. Not my fault it got whitewashed out of the books at your school, and the first you’re hearing of it is on your holiday. Just be happy you didn’t come across me giving my talk at the famine memorial.
