Dr. King was wiretapped by the FBI for the purpose of neutralizing him as an effective civil rights leader and on the pretext that he was under communist influence. Tomorrow the Senate will vote on expanding warrantless surveillance of Americans.

Surveillance of King was in project MINARET. 1sr they tracked Americans who went to Cuba. Then to possible drug traffickers. Then to anti Vietnam war activists. Then civil rights leaders, journalists, and activists. Tomorrow’s bill expands 702 to cover many domestic crimes.

The FBI used their wiretaps as the basis for a letter to try to get him to kill himself. They talked about his personal life (affairs). They also sent him audio of having sex. https://t.co/Nj5qpp7cQs The 702 bill gives the govt broad discretion to act while avoiding the courts.

Hoover justified going after King b/c he was a ‘threat’ to America. The FISA bill will disproportionately harm minorities, immigrants, and activists. The other side is appealing to racism about possible terrorists. https://t.co/VBLaV12GlA

King surveillance was under JFK, LBJ, and Nixon, who was unstable and tried to undermine the constitution. Trump is unstable and is trying to undermine the constitution. He will get to pick the next NSA director, and picked racist Sessions as Attorney General.

When we don’t learn from history, we repeat it. No president should be able to spy on Americans without getting a warrant. Period. It’s begging for abuse. The Senate votes tomorrow on whether to legalize it. Tell them ‘no’ on cloture.

The Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act was created in large part because of the abuses aimed at King and others. It’s protections have been chipped away since 9/11, with whole chunks missing. The bill in the senate tomorrow is a major danger.
