Italian Government Secures Ibrahim's Freedom [video]
Meriam Ibrahim, her two children, and Italian Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs, Lapo Pistelli
Through negotiations between the Italian government, the Vatican and Sudanese authorities, Meriam Ibrahim and her children have finally been granted their freedom.
On Thursday, images were captured of Ibrahim and her children stepping off of a government jet in Italy accompanied by Italy’s Vice Minister for Foreign Affairs, Lapo Pistelli.
Earlier, Pistelli had posted a photo of Ibrahim, her children and husband, with the caption reading, “With Meriam, Maya, Martin and [Ibrahim's husband] Daniel, a few minutes from Rome. Mission accomplished.“
They were all greeted at the plane by Italy’s Prime Minister and his wife. The Prime Minister calling it, “a day of celebration.”
Pope praises Ibrahim’s courageous act of faith.
Shortly after arriving in Italy, Meriam and her family met with Pope Francis.
Father Federico Lombardi, SJ, head of the Vatican Press Office, said the meeting was, “very serene and affectionate”. Pope Francis commended Meriam for her “courageous witness to perseverance in the Faith.”
In an earlier statement, steadfast in her convictions, Ibrahim said, “If they want to execute me then they should go ahead and do it because I’m not going to change my faith.”
She added, “I refuse to change. I am not giving up Christianity just so that I can live. I know I could stay alive by becoming a Muslim and I would be able to look after our family, but I need to be true to myself.”
Obama Administration Criticized in Congressional Hearing
On Wednesday, Rep. Chris Smith led a Congressional hearing about Ibrahim’s plight featuring pro-life leader Tony Perkins of the Family Research Council.
In his testimony to Congress, Perkins said Ibrahim has shown more courage than the Obama administration throughout her ordeal:
“We are here because of the courage of a 27-year-old mother — a 27-year-old mother, if you’ll just imagine the situation for a moment, in a prison on Khartoum [Sudan], which the U.N. says has an infant mortality rate of one child dying per day in that prison. At her side, at eight months pregnant, is a 21-month-old boy. And she is told that if she will denounce her faith in Jesus Christ, there’s the door, you can be a free person. But yet she refused to denounce her faith because she had the courage to stare death in the face.”
“What has America done?” Perkins challenged. “Where is the courage in America?”
“While other governments have called attention to Meriam’s situation, including the European parliament passing a resolution and the British government’s prime minister speaking out publicly, the U.S. government has been practically mute,” Perkins said.
A history of oppression through an Islamic government system of Shariah Law
Ibrahim had been imprisoned in a Khartoum, Sudan jail in February for committing adultery with her husband and apostasy.
In May, a Sudanese court sentenced her to 100 lashes and death by hanging.
While shackled to a prison bed in May, she gave birth to her daughter, Maya. She remained in the prison in chains caring for the infant and her 21 month old son.
In June, amid immense pressure and international exposure, a Sudanese appellate court overturned her conviction.
On the day the Sudanese court ruled in her favor, Ibrahim and her family attempted to leave the country but were detained by government officials at the Khartoum airport claiming she possessed inadequate travel documents.
But now…she is free at last.
