“It feels like you only need me when it’s convenient,” Daniel mumbled, the plant he had been repotting forgotten as this conversation had begun to turn in its current direction. “You disappear for weeks at a time and then come back to tell me you need me without any pretense.” Daniel picked the potting soil up, turning his gaze back to the plant. “That’s what I don’t get. Do you need me, but can’t figure out how to need me? Or do you only need me when you feel guilty and want someone to help you lick your wounds?” His tone came out harsher than he intended, but it didn’t matter at that point to disguise how he was feeling. “I feel used, Robert. Maybe you need to figure it out before making a declaration like that.”

Daniel shrugged, knowing that the damage was done. He thought about the consequences of his actions and what he could remember that were in his dos and don’ts of baby sitting, there was nothing that said he couldn’t give the kid a second helping of ice cream. “It wasn’t the puppy eyes.” He replied, eyes watching as the kid ran around the grassy area in order to make sure he didn’t hurt himself in the process of getting rid of all the extra energy. “It was the way he asked. Besides,” Daniel turned his attention to Robert for a brief moment, “It’s your fault for leaving me alone long enough to do it. He’ll tire himself out... eventually.”

“You’re an idiot.” Daniel massaged his palm with his thumb as he watched Robert from the door frame. He knew that it wasn’t what Robert needed to hear at the moment but watching the other man pace back and forth was starting to drive him crazy. He was ready to add something to it, poke the bear a little more in order to get him to think about anything other than what was obviously upsetting him. His words did cause Robert to stop in his tracks and look at him, his brows furrowed as though being called an idiot was exactly what he needed to hear. 

The next two minutes were a blur; if asked, Daniel wouldn’t be able to recall what happened first. Logically, it was Robert coming over to him, then whether he made the move first or Daniel did was up for interpretation. What Daniel did know was that compared to his chapped lips, Robert’s were plush, almost too soft and Daniel could get used to it if it were to happen again. Instead of playing it cool or even having any semblance of knowing what to do, Daniel gave Robert a playful shove, shaking his head. “You’re still an idiot.”

“Well..I kind of figured.” Daniel didn’t make eye contact with Robert as he rubbed his wrists where the handcuffs had dug into them hours before. Maybe he shouldn’t have mouthed off that much to the arresting officer but how was he supposed to know that the one he usually bribed would transfer precincts? “You’re the one who always ends up showing up and paying my bail. We’re bordering on this being a sugar-date relationship.”

Daniel made an unintelligible noise at first. It was two am, or somewhere in that hour where even on his most active of nights he still would be well into as deep a slumber as he could muster. With Robert constantly tossing and turning at his side, it was a lot harder to fall asleep for more than twenty minutes at a time. 

He could have pretended he didn’t hear Robert, continue with this next attempt at sleep until the next fit of movements woke him up again. Instead, he continued to lay there, listening for any sort of gentle breathing to signify that Robert had fallen to sleep or was at least talking in his sleep. It wasn’t that Daniel didn’t want to return the sentiment, he was just too tired to have a response. An appropriate one. 

Instead, he shifted in his spot, mumbling a soft, “Of course you do, dummy. Now go back to sleep.”
