Welcome to Women’s History Month! Throughout the month we’re celebrating queer women in history and media, starting today with the 2017 Academy Award-winning Chilean film Una mujer fantástica (A Fantastic Woman).

This film’s grounded and sometimes surprisingly hopeful depiction of a trans woman’s grief provided such a realistic depiction of legal barriers facing trans people in Chile that it contributed to positive changes in legislation around gender transition.

LA VISITA (2014) dir. Mauricio López Fernández In an old house on the outskirts of Santiago a wake ceremony for Coya's husband has been prepared. Coya is the maid who has served the family for many years, and who is already considered part of it. For the effects of the ceremony they are waiting the arrival of Elena, Coya's trans daughter, for a visit set to be more important than the wake itself and can completely upset the conservatism of the family, unleashing conflicts and frustrations that will reach Tete, the owner of the house, who also suffers because of her husband's infidelity.
