[Microtus] by Daniel Essig

You may recall that Daniel Essig, who “creates mixed-media book structures that incorporate unusual woods, handmade paper, found objects, fossils, and mica.” We've featured his work before, showing a tiny book that contained pebbles in the cover.

This beautiful book, however, does not contain pebbles. Instead the cover displays vole ribs behind a mica window, set in oak wood covers.

Yeah, it took us by surprise too.

Some minis really rock!  This one certainly does, not only because of the unusual cover, but also because there are also two books in one! 

This is often referred to as a dos-a-dos book binding, where there are two books facing opposite directions that share a middle cover. The rocks, however, are not typical of dos-a-dos bindings. Instead, you find that in the work of Daniel Essig, who “creates mixed-media book structures that incorporate unusual woods, handmade paper, found objects, fossils, and mica.” As you can see, he’s used small stones that he must have found to complement his structure.
