Opting Up - Danny Simms/Natalie Cruz

“Surprised you came back… after what Patrick pulled…” Natalie’s voice is low, soft and Danny spares her only the smallest glance, shrugging even as she pulls the second scrub top from her locker, settling it into place slowly, her voice low, surprisingly warm even as she half-smiles. “Yeah, well he pulled one more trick this morning…. See you out there?” “Wh…” She finds out the moment she gets back to the office space she’s been given, smaller now, of course, since they have two people in charge of the Surgery and ER. The change of position had been okayed all the way down the line, until her. She has no real choice, not if she doesn’t want to lose Danny to another hospital, so she signs the agreement, filing it and calling Danny to her office. “Well, I was hoping to call you to talk about this anyway, seems he beat me to the punch… you going to be okay in surgery?” “Of course. Got a good teacher, haven’t I?” Later, of course, as the shift progresses, Danny surprises her over and over, proving adaptable in ways she hadn’t seen coming, until, in the end, she’s free to change paths and tactics, trusting Danny to handle more without her hovering over her made it easier to work as a team on the patients that needed them, allowing her space to breathe and focus on what needed to happen. It's only when they are free to head home that Natalie walks out with Danny at her side, her voice soft as they make their way out to the exits to the main road and the bus stops. It's not her usual thing to do, to make an offer like the one she gives Danny, but she knows, deep down, she has to show some sign of supporting the woman, after everything they have both been through. “Need a ride home… it’s late.” “Sure.” It's still uneasy, between them, even now. They had found a balance, at work, but Natalie knew finding a way past the simple steps of being good at their jobs was going to be hard, if not impossible. They drive in silence, Natalie aware of the way Danny is picking at her nails, a small sign of nerves, but one she understands. They are still silent as they arrive, Danny moving to get out of the car, glancing sideways at Natalie before she speaks, her voice softer than usual, gentle even and Natalie knows there’s an edge to it, even as she accepts the reasons why. “Thank you. See you tomorrow?” “Of course. Don’t be late.” “Wouldn’t dare.” It's simple, but it’s a first step towards what Natalie really wants, a new chance with Danny, something far beyond the awkwardness they had both felt.
