Just Another Christmas (2020)

This is a Brazilian film, so if you don't like subtitles and you don't understand Portuguese, you'll have to change the language. I think the original language is always better, but my dad hates subtitles. Whatever, either way, watch this film. It is worth it.

Jorge (Leandro Hassum) is a husband and father who hates Christmas because he was born on Christmas. It's Christmas Eve 2010, and he's getting ready for his wife's family to come over. His wife Laura (Elisa Pinheiro) is cooking, so he has to get the gifts for their son Leozinho (Miguel Rômulo) and their daughter Aninha (Arianne Botelho). Also living with them is Laura's grandpa Vô Nhanhão (Levi Ferreira), who has been catatonic for several years. Once the family arrives, they're up to their antics. Laura's mom Teodora (Louise Cardoso) is crying about Christmases past. Tio Victor (José Rubens Chachá) is trying to talk politics. Laura's brother Luiz Cláudio (Rodrigo Fagundes) asks Jorge for money for his next business idea. Laura's sister Luana (Lola Fanucchi) is talking about the break up with her most recent boyfriend who was supposed to dress up as Santa. Luiz's wife Soraia (Giselle Lopes) is arguing with Tio Victor. Tio Victor is so upset that he takes his turkey (not the plate, just bare handed grabs a whole ass turkey) and storms out. The family is distraught. After they calm down, Laura forces Jorge to dress up as Santa for the kids. Jorge is miserable and bitching when Vô Nhanhão turns to him and speaks. Jorge freaks out, but nobody believes him. Then, dressed as Santa, Jorge falls off the roof and hurts his head.

The next day, he wakes up, and it's Christmas Eve 2011. He discovers that he can't remember anything from the last year, but when he woke up on Christmas 2010, he had forgotten everything that happened the day before. And so it goes, we see Jorge waking up on Christmas Eve every year with no memory of the life he has lived that year except for the past Christmas Eves (and everything before the injury), and the next day, he has forgotten Christmas Eve. As the years go by, Christmas Eve Jorge discovers that he is a very different man during the rest of the year. And while Laura appreciates the old Jorge on Christmas Eve, the new Jorge that exists the rest of the year is much more popular with his assistant Márcia (Danielle Winits), a woman that Christmas Eve Jorge doesn't even know.

As Jorge comes to terms with his life changing without him seeing, he accepts his reality as it is and tries to make the most of the one day he can remember each year before he is someone he doesn't recognize.

Y'all this movie is dark. My husband said it had no business making us feel the way it did, but it was so good. It doesn't seem like it at the beginning, but trust me. 5 stars.
