i've seen some people interpret the way PCHD described dankovsky's meeting with eva upon arriving to the town as implying that they might have slept together that night. and it always made total sense to me as an implied possibility, with the fanservice-y way that eva is treated by the text — like most games, especially those made in the early 2000s, it was created with straight male gamers in mind, so it makes sense that they would have you boot up the first route in the list and immediately be greeted by a scantily dressed woman who seems really into you.

but i stumbled on the line in a spreadsheet i have comparing different translations while i was looking for something else, and it made me realize that the implication of them actually sleeping together seems to be exclusive to the 2015 remaster? both the 2005 version and the original russian text come across as much more straightforwardly platonic, at least from dankovsky's perspective. a "loyal friend" became a "lovely companion" in PCHD, and even changing "solitary lady" to "single girl" reframes eva from the perspective of her romantic eligibility, rather than highlighting how isolated and alone she is (which is obviously important foreshadowing to her suicide).

(though i did go down a rabbit hole trying to confirm the connotations of "подругу", which the 2005 english release translated to friend, but literally does translate to "girl friend" — from the language forum threads i found on the topic, it seems like it mainly is just used to mean "female friend", and is the feminine form of друг (droog/friend). i actually saw several people say that "моя девушка" or "my woman" would be the common way to refer to one's girlfriend in russian, which adds some nuance to andrey referring to eva as "my woman" after her suicide — in english it comes across as a very chauvinistic way to put it, especially with daniil's incredulous reaction, but i guess it sounds more "normal" in the original?)

same goes for this similar line from the scrolling text intro when you pick the bachelor route (pics are from 2015, 2005, and russian in that order): "gets to know" can be read as a little euphemistic, while the original translation is much more straightforward and gives the sense of him just staying there to wait until morning.

and to be clear because i keep seeing people talk about shipping discourse, i'm not vagueposting about anything i've seen recently — when i talk about seeing people have this interpretation, i'm talking about fanfics from several years ago. and i'm not saying that anyone is incorrect for having this interpretation (people have certainly made shippy fanfic from much shakier grounds). i just decided to post about this because it surprised me, and because i find daniil calling eva his "loyal friend" very cute. and also it's kind of crazy that they somehow added more fanservicey implications to the 2015 remaster over the 2005 original.
