Smart Productivity & People-Driven Intentions

I had an informational interview with Dan Kim of 37signals last week where we discussed productivity and exceptional companies.

Productivity for me has always been defined by to-do lists, strict calendars, and planning out my days hour by hour. Yes I was technically getting tasks done and accomplishing goals I had set but was I enjoying my work? Was crossing the next to-do on my list fulfilling or was it just a motion I went through to feel productive? Something Dan said to me gave me a new perspective:

"Let's not spend time thinking about stuff that isn't a problem. You're just as likely to make a good decision today as you are tomorrow, so just do it today."

Sometimes, we become absorbed in our to-do lists and calendars. We're creatures of habit, and we can lose sight of the things we actually value.

I want to work for an exceptional company alongside exceptional people. Jobs at these companies seem unattainable but speaking with Dan made me rediscover something. At the heart of every company is just people. Everything you do in life; they're just people on the other end. There's no magic. Being able to relate to that person, selling what you believe, and making it resonate is the challenge.

Based off these lessons, here's some homework for myself (ironically in list form):

Focus on what's important.

Be critical and decisive with what you keep track of. Make sure it really matters.

When you get stuck--Just get started.

Build a body of work to showcase.

Remember that in whatever you do it is very, very people-driven.
