Perseverance:
noun
"persistence in doing something despite difficulty or delay in achieving success."
On a warm April morning when I was 15 years old my father was detained by ICE, right before school. Talk about a curve ball - my families life crashed before my first period algebra class. My sister's and I still went to school that morning and I still remember being so numb I hardly spoke that day. He was deported to Tijuana, Mexico 4 days later.
I got a Job to help pay the bills and keep food on the table - I struggled to keep up with a 4.0 GPA but had to settle with a passing because I worked long hours - I graduated High School with my head held high. My family and I spent the money that was saved for my continuing education on lawyer fees and bills. I dropped 75 pounds with diet, exercise and discipline. I held an internship at a gymnasium, worked a full time job and attended school all at the same time. I received an Associate's Degree in Medical Assisting with a fantastic GPA and RMA title. I came out of the closet as a homosexual. I worked in a rehabilitation center where I gained patience, knowledge and even more drive.
I worked my way from a humble janitorial position to an Office Clerk, then a Secretary, then a Communications and Events Coordinator to now the current Advertising and Digital Media Coordinator for an incredible company in a respected industry that invested in me. I received several certifications in the fitness industry. I helped many people reach their fitness and health goals. I donated to my community through fitness and wellness classes.
I fell in love. I got married to an amazing man. I purchased a house that turned into a home and a car that makes us feel safe.
I continue to make mistakes. I still miss my dad. I sometimes want to quit. I will forever persevere.
"He gave to me more summer wine."
