Copy/pasting this from my Twitter because why not:
What got me into the whole Claire & Dante thing ;)
You all probably know that DMC started as a RE4 prototype. "Tony Redgrave" was the main character & meant to be Lord Spencer's son. That idea was later scrapped and we got DMC and RE4 as we know them today.
Kamiya admitted that he chose the name "Redgrave" to be similar to "Redfield". He also referenced Claire (among more of "his" ladies) in Bayonetta. Reference, not a direct crossover or shared universe thing - but a reference. Which brings us to the DMC novel from 2001.
In this novel, (teen) Dante (under the alias of "Tony Redgrave") mentions that it took him months to ask "Claire" out on a date (and his partner teases him that he doesn't have a chance with her anyway).
I didn't think much of this at first, but then I played Bayonetta and noticed the Claire reference. So what if Kamiya likes to cross-reference his characters in his games?! Doesn't seem so far-fetched now anymore, does it?! He also once said that all "his" games are connected, that includes RE2 and DMC1 (and the DMC1 novel).
This does not apply to the newer DMC games and Bayonetta, as discussed many times (angels exist or don't exist), but to "his" games, at least according to him. Not saying it's all a big shared universe, now or back then, but it's something.
I actually once asked him if he remembers the "Claire" character, but he said he doesn't. So it can't really be said for sure if this "Claire" is Claire Redfield and while some parts of the novel are now canon, others contradict later material.
(In)direct reference or not, but it got me thinking ;)
...
Anyway, I figured I share this. I had people call Claire/Dante weird/obscure/too far-fetched/etc. and I felt like I should explain myself. Some even attacked me online or avoided me on purpose in real life because of this pairing. Here’s proof that I at least put some thought into it. It’s not much, but it’s something...
And feel free to approach me if you want to know more. Either comment, send me a PN, anon, whatever. I noticed more and more people are actually open-minded about Claire/Dante (there’s art and fanfics out there that are not from me, that’s so cool!), so I’d love to talk more about them :)
Capcom, I see what you did there!
Seriously, this simultaneous advertising for both games is killing me x'D
