DMBJ Time Raider jokes explained

I just finished watching Time Raider (吴邪私家笔记) and omg wow is this reboot amazing! Although I think each iteration of cast does a wonderful job, the screenwriting has absolutely not been of equal quality.

And we finally get a version of DMBJ that's probably closer to the novel descriptions, higher quality, and includes some clues and references that foreshadow and connect with future plot holes points more properly.

I'm so excited to see the future seasons... hopefully this cast will stay with us for some time yet!

But anyway, idk if perhaps it's because my Chinese is better now, or I was just super slow the first time around watching / reading DMBJ... but there's a couple of jokes (and probably more) that can't be explained unless you understand Chinese, so I'm sharing just for fun (other literate natives, please overlook how obvious these jokes might be lol

Wang Pangzi's name - Ok I really was just stupidly slow on this one but... his supposed actual name (Wang Yueban) is written like this 王月半. His nickname of 'fatty' or Pangzi, is written like this 胖子. Literally, his nickname is his name collapsed! 月半 = 胖. Ha. Natives, please overlook how stupid this realization is.

When Wu Xie applies 'lotion' (i.e. his saliva) to Pangzi's back to stop his itching and jokes it's 'export grade'. Y'all, this is because 'export' is literally written as 出口 or 'exit mouth'. Of course, in context of export it means exiting port (mouth). But here, Wu Xie is joking it's export because it's literally export... of his mouth lmao. He literally told Pangzi it came out of his mouth.

So, Qilin Blood only works when the heart is beating fast and the blood temperature rises. And Zhang Qiling constantly disappears while they’re tomb robbing. Wu Xie and the others assume it’s to fight blood corpses and do things. Really though? He’s going off to do jumping jacks and push ups, occasionally runs around in circles.

Partly to keep his temperature up so the Qilin Blood stays active. Partly to keep his abs well defined in case he has to (finds a reason to) take his shirt off around Wu Xie.

LUNAR NEW YEAR EXCHANGE 2026

Welcome to the Lunar New Year Exchange for 2026.

♘This time we will be celebrating the Year of the Horse! ♘

The Lunar New Year Treat Exchange is open to fan creators of all types, including writers, artists, vidders, and more.

It is based on the Fandom Stocking and Fandom Giftbox exchanges that ran on LiveJournal and Dreamwidth; no one will be assigned to create a gift for any specific person. Instead, anyone who wants a treat can sign up with their wish list of characters, ships, likes, prompts, and DNWs!

I have changed two aspects of the treat exchange, so please read the rules carefully!

♘ Schedule:

-Sign up: November 2nd, 2025, to November 8th, 2025. -Creation Period: November 8th, 2025 to February 10th, 2026 -Treats Released: February 17th, 2026 -Anon Removed: February 24th, 2026

♘ Rules

Please make sure your treat focuses on your recipient’s requested ship or relationship (or one of their requests, if they have listed multiple ones).

If you sign up, you will be expected to create at least one treat for another person. Filling any specific prompts is not obligatory, but please create something you believe your recipient will enjoy!

You must not include anything that your recipient has listed as a DNW (Do Not Want) - please be mindful of this.

The minimum requirements for the treats are 300 words for fic or podfic, one sketch on unlined paper for art (traditional or digital; no manips), or 30 seconds for a vid.

If you are creating a podfic and are not the original author of the fic, you must obtain the permission of the original author.

All the requests will be made visible to everyone for treats! You don't have to sign up to create a treat; anyone can do one if they see something they like. Only people who sign up are required to participate. Please understand that if you do not sign up, you will not receive a treat in return.

This is an anonymous exchange on all fronts. Please refrain from discussing which anonymous treat request is yours, as well as which anonymous treat request you will be writing for. After the works are revealed, there’ll be a one-week anonymous period before the creator reveals.

This is new, so PLEASE READ: When you pick which treat you would like to create, let me know ASAP! I will be writing “In Progress” as you work on it, and “Complete” when you’re done. This is so people know what anonymous treat requests have something being worked on already, and who doesn't, and we can fill in the anonymous treat requests faster!

After the reveals, comment on your gift to show appreciation for everyone's hard work. Remember to be kind to one another. People do this out of the kindness of their hearts, not because they have to. Please, respect the time and talent they have put into your treat!

♘ Sign-Up Information

-Sign-ups will take place. There, you'll be able to fill out details about your request and offer. You can edit your sign-up at any time until the sign-ups close on November 8th.

-Relationship/Pairings: Please write which relationships and/or pairings you would like to see in your treats. You can differentiate the two by how they are written. (Example: Pairings are (Wu Xie/Xiaoge) - using a / in between the names. Relationships are (Wu Xie & Xiaoge) using a & in between names. Please note that works featuring QPRs, ace, and/or aro characters are absolutely valid to request in an exchange. You may also request a fully platonic relationship if you wish.

-Treat Interests: What are you interested in receiving as a treat?

-Preferred DMBJ Canon: Please pick the canon(s) you would like your story set in. There is also an ‘any’ and ‘other’ option!

General Likes: This is where you can put the genres you like (humor, angst, etc.) and any other general likes that you enjoy!

DNW (Do Not Wants): things that your creator must not include - squicks, triggers, characters, or things that you simply don’t like. Remember that you don’t owe anyone an explanation about why something is a DNW, and that DNWs are not meant to be taken personally. Just list the things you don’t like, “DNW: X, Y.” Please list if you have any audio or visual triggers (such as flashing lights). This could be in your DNW or could be separate. Please also list song/music DNWs (e.g. "please no lyrics that use the n-word" or "please no lyrics in [specific language]" or “please no [specific genre/s of music”).

Favorite Themes and Tropes: Do you like fantasy, sticking to canon, or… There was only one bed? Go ahead and list it here!

Prompts/Specific Ideas: If you have any prompts, you can put them here! You can be as general or as detailed as you’d like, but remember that while your creator will try to make the best gift for you, filling a specific prompt is not obligatory. You can include a crossover prompt (with other DMBJ verse or other canons), but make sure it’s not the only prompt you have.
