“Change is coming.”

Today, May 9, 2016, Filipinos exercised their right to vote for those who they believe are the most fit to lead the Philippines. Photos of index fingers marked with indelible ink filled my social media feeds. On television, I saw my fellowmen braving the sweltering heat as they went in droves to their designated voting precincts.

The people have made their respective choices that, collectively, would change the course of the country’s future in a matter of days. Indeed, change is coming, but it’s too early to tell whether it’s the realization of a nation’s dreams or the manifestation of its nightmares.

Whatever happens, there’s only one thing I’m sure of: not registering to vote will haunt me -- perhaps for as long as I live.

Seeing the partial, unofficial election results, I shiver at the thought of what’s ahead. A man who has little to no regard for human rights, lauded for being brutally honest and a literal brute, is millions of votes closer to securing the presidency. A man who nonchalantly dismisses any mention of the tragedies that occurred during his father’s chaotic regime is fighting to possibly rewrite history as the second most powerful figure in the land.

I want to get mad at all the voters who, blinded by their great distaste for the current administration, gave their trust wholeheartedly to politicians who love their hyperbole. I want to get mad at all the voters who were so naive to even entertain the idea that the Philippines can become a straight-up utopia in just a few months. I want to get mad at all those who sold their votes for money, which wouldn’t even last them a week.

I want to get mad and blame people for jeopardizing the peace that our ancestors fought hard for. But I can’t. For however flawed and abhorrent it is, a stand was made by those I loathe. At the end of the day, they cast a vote -- I didn’t. They took part in arguments that helped encouraged shifts in perspectives, risking their relationships in the process -- I didn’t.

For being complacent, I, too, am accountable for whatever fate has in store for the Philippines.

Tomorrow, May 10, 2016, I’ll wake up, take a bath, and grab two cups of ice-cold Milo before I ride the elevator to the office. I’ll go straight to my cubicle in the corner, open the PC on my cluttered desk, sit down on the comfortable swiveling chair, and feel discomfort as I see all the unread e-mails coming in.

Tomorrow, May 10, 2016, will just be another day in the life of a young professional trying to make ends meet. But at the back of his mind, he will be contemplating about the future. He will try to fend off the what-if’s, as the ominous winds of change continue to howl...

PH Election 2016

During mass sabi ni Father don't worry kung manalo or hindi ang bet mo for president. Atleast hindi ka nagpapadala sa popularity. Remember, a leader will guide us to a better future pero ang tunay na pagbabago ay magsisimula within OURSELVES! And of course hindi man manalo si Miriam, atleast kilala ko kung sino ba talaga ang deserving. Let's start to change our country by changing ourselves one step at a time. 😊👆 God Bless us!
