So I’m writing a book and I am making the narrator play a big role, but never describing anything other than their voice and I don’t describe the main character physically either (except their voice in the end) and I was thinking what if I don’t describe what anyone physically looks like in the whole book? It’s all ambiguous and left to the reader. Any thoughts?
Hey,
This is an epic idea!!
With physical descriptions you can lead your reader into thinking that your character looks a certain way, but it will always be down to their personal imagination as to what the character will look like in their head. If you are willing to let go of your control over that, power to you! That sounds like a very compelling read, so long as there isn’t too much emphasis on the idea that the reader doesnt know... What i mean by that is, you don’t want your reader to be left too frustrated, it might put them off a little bit if there is a spotlight on their lack of knowledge. Does make sense? Absolutely give it a go, but don’t put too much attention on what you are doing. Be sneaky!
You’ve got this! I would love to hear how it goes :)
