Piecing and Installing “Chandelier”
A couple of weeks ago we posted a blog about Max Yela (Head, UWM Special Collections) and Dara Larson (art professor, Alverno College) making paper with their assistants Cecilia Castro and Alison Newman for a couple of installations at Milwaukee’s Villa Terrace Decorative Arts Museum as part of the UWM Libraries’ Look Here! Project exhibition (June 28 - September 16). The two pieces are titled “Chandelier” and “Screen,” and both were installed recently.
Today we show the process of putting together and installing the 16-foot long chandelier that cascades down a spiral staircase and is illuminated from within at the museum’s entrance. Max and Dara laid out the arrangement of the individual sheets; Alison devised the system for sewing the chandelier’s sections; Max, Cecelia, and Alison stitched all the sections, while Dara worked on “Screen,” and all four participated in the installation. We’ll show the process for “Screen” next week. Nice job gang!
