“What were you doing?”
“Derek, it’s not his fault.”
Mr. Stilinski peered out the window, brushing aside the blinds with one hand, Rainier beer in the other. He watched his son — is that a cast? What has he done now? — jump between his boyfriend, Derek, and the Whittemore boy.
The sheriff frowned as their voices became too low to hear through the window. Reaching for the latch, Mr. Stilinski gently slid the glass pane to the left and leaned his ear toward the gap.
”- not my fault he broke his hand," Jackson drawled.
“Punching your face,” Stiles snapped. “I broke my hand punching your face because you thought it would be a good idea to kiss me.”
Derek looked furious. “What have I told you about going near him?”
The sheriff fought a wave of anger upon realizing this was aimed at Stiles, not Jackson.
Stiles puffed up, furious as well. “What the hell? Victim-blaming, Derek? You should be yelling at him! He’s the one who thinks it’s a good idea to go around kissing people in relationships!”
Jackson rolled his eyes. “Whatever. I’m out of here.”
“Don’t you walk away from me!" Derek shouted. He was ignored.
“Just forget about it, okay?" Stiles demanded sharply, stepping around his boyfriend to make his way toward the house.
“Forget about it?" Derek hissed as the boy wrenched open the door and they stepped into the foyer. "You broke your hand!"
"Is there something you’d like to tell me, boys?" the Sheriff asked, tone dry, before taking a calm sip of his beer.
Stiles jumped. Derek didn’t. In fact, Derek looked like he’d known the Sheriff was there the whole time.
"It’s nothing, Dad," Stiles mumbled.
"Really? Because a broken hand isn’t exactly what I’d call ‘nothing.’"
"Dad-"
The Sheriff leveled his son with a look, then turned his eyes to Derek. “Keep him away from the Whittemore boy, would you?”
Stiles gaped.
Derek nodded sagely. “I have every intention to, sir.”
