Carnival Row 2.07 - Kindred

My thoughts about the last season of “Carnival Row” (WARNING ⚠️ There are SPOILERS!)

- The plot is intriguing, but too complex for only ten episodes. The final resolution seems weak and a bit forced.

- Vignette the worst character of all 😤 I loved her in the first season, I understood her trauma and her struggles, I thought Philo hurt her too much... and, in this final season, she becomes a sort of fickle teenager who blames the others not only for their mistakes but also for hers?! Damn it, she is incapable of taking her own responsibilities ‒ in contrast with Darius and Tourmaline, who suffered a lot but behave like adults.

- Tourmaline the “replacement” of Philo? Seriously?! Folks, Tourmaline deserves a partner who puts her first. Vignette goes with her only because she is an easier choice than Philo 😑

- Darius’ death is awful and pointless. I’m not particularly involved in his relationship with Tourmaline, but their connection is undeniable... and then the screenwriters decide to kill him 😫 Why?!

- Imogen ad Agreus are cute together, but their tension after Ezra’s death seems over-the-top to me. Agreus has never tried to “control” Imogen; her accusation is a nonsense.

- Poor Berwick shouldn’t be dead 😭

- The failed improvement of the Parliament is demoralizing.

- Last but not least: Philo’s development that misses the target. For heaven’s sake, stop torturing this poor man! He must learn to love and forgive himself, but the screenwriters continue to pick on him! At the end he seems to accept his status of half-blood, but that’s not enough: he is hurt (both physically and emotionally) and lost hope. Yes, he made horrible mistakes, but he gets smacked almost all the time... and he thinks he doesn’t deserve Vignette (Vignette, who abandoned him in prison without batting an eye!), like in the first season ☹ This is unfair. Philo doesn’t love himself enough and is alone, while he deserves affection, compassion and forgiveness. What a disastrous conclusion 😔

I can totally see why people ship Darius and Philo, but to me they are intensely devoted and sexually charged while remaining firmly platonic without choosing to venture into the sexual and/or romantic. It just isn't in the cards for them in this universe. There are plenty of alternate universes that are more conducive, that are kinder to those other facets of their relationship.

But no matter what other feelings they do or don't have, they are always friends. The best of friends.

And I think that's beautiful.

1. BUILDING A NEW LIFE - Madame Moira gathers business owners and community leaders within the Row to organize rooms, food, and supplies for the newcomers. Vignette attempts to revive her Raven connections to assist.

2. RAVENS UNDERGROUND - The Raven has to change its focus away from lixir importing and toward smuggling food in and people out of the Row.

3. MOST DON’T SURVIVE - Philo visits a faerish midwife to learn more about his half-blood status. Discussions are had about life-span, fertility, and phantom wing pain.

4. ON NAMES AND IDENTITIES - Philo speaks with Mima Sawsaan about the possibility of changing his name, officially with her blessing, to Philo Querelle, and considers how to go about reclaiming his heritage.

5. CLOTHES MAKE THE MAN - Philo's coat is destroyed beyond repair after the encounter with the darkasher. He goes to a seamstress on the Row, who offers him a coat made for a faerie. Philo muses on fitting in on the Row, as the seamstress sews up the wing-slits. The seamstress mentions that her elderly aunt who previously ran the shop may remember Aisling, and may have made her performance gowns.

6. UNCLAIMED PROPERTY - Philo and Vignette visit Aisling's flat, trying to save some of her belongings before the crowds of displaced fae try to find lodging on the Row. The landlady is skeptical of Philo's story, having planned to sell all of Aisling’s things, and rent out the flat ASAP.

7. NEITHER MAN NOR FAE - Philo and Vignette discover just how hard it will be for the fae to accept Philo in the current climate. A skeptical faun puts their resilience to the test.

8. Aisling/Breakspear (AU) - Breakspear doesn't chicken out on the meeting with Aisling. They run away together to a mostly-fae rural settlement away from the Burgue. They raise Philo together. Although he's "out" as a half-blood, he doesn't fit in, because of his half-blood status, and also because, as Afissa guessed, his wings were underdeveloped, and he was never able to fly. When war breaks out in Tirnanoc, many of the young fae of Philo's age are going back to fight. Philo desperately wants to go, to help defend his mother's homeland from the Pact. But he has to decide if he'll have a better chance joining up as a disabled fae, or disguised as a human.

9. COMING OUT - Philo visits Dr. Sylvanus's butcher shop, intending to cook dinner for Vignette, comes out as halfblood to Sylvanus and gets some good advice.

10. FULL MOON ON THE ROW - The Constabulary release Darius into the Row - Philo and Vignette must approach Dahlia for help keeping him (and the other residents of the Row) safe during the full moon.

11. UNTAUGHT HISTORIES - Vignette and Tourmaline set up a school in the Row, to help care for the fae children who are no longer allowed to attend human schools. Philo begins to learn about faerish history, language, arts, and traditions.

12. THE HARDER PATH (AU) - Philo doesn't fake his death in Tirnanoc. He and Vignette make a run for Ignata as she suggested...
