(2/2) Bark gilder Mary Helen O'Brien lays the leaf – in this case, a 16kt pale gold – over the bole. Then, the entire face of the frame – including the reeding – is burnished to a high shine with an agate burnisher (a variety of shapes are shown in the first slide). The gilding will be distressed with a light rub. After this, the gold is sealed, as this karat would tarnish over time. Finally, a light patina is added to the surface of the frame. (1/2) Our first day of a multi-part post: Recently, a collector client came to us to frame a painting by the Washington DC-based artist @dariush.artist. The painting was commissioned some years ago, to capture a particularly happy time during the client’s time living in the DC area, so they wanted a special frame for this artwork. After looking at profile options, designer and client selected a specially-milled, reeded profile based on a design by Edgar Degas. Together with Bark gilder Mary Helen O’Brien, the two chose the gold leaf karat (16kt pale gold) and the color for the clay undercoat for the frame (dark red).
