Last week, we talked about the gilding capabilities of our craftspeople. Here, our Palladio profile, milled in maple and gilded in yellow gold over red bole. It's all about perspective: Here, two stem profiles sit in our wood shop. Looking directly at them, the frames' faces are gilded in white gold. (1/2) Now that our Espenscheid frame has been gilded and lacquered, the next step is to tone and tamp the frame surface. Here, Mary Helen applies a thinned toner made from Japan paint (Japan paints are often used in theater because of their dramatic intensity, and have been used broadly throughout the decorative arts and crafts).
