content warning: dark!reader, mature themes, mentions funeral/loss of a parent/grief, violence + murder! (it gets weird)
when steve's mother died, it was like your whole world came to a standstill. with only a handful of loved ones in your life, her being one of them, it was like one of the pillars holding up your sanity and happiness had just come crashing down
you couldn't even imagine how broken steve must have been. ever a mommy's boy, losing sarah changed him.
her loss was one of the things that led to him being so crazily protective over you. now, you were the one living thing he loved, and he'd go to any lengths to keep you safe
similarly, watching steve lose his mom changed you. yes, you'd always been protective and maybe a little obsessed, but seeing him so broken and defeated only emphasized those things.
you took on the brunt of the work for the funeral. to ensure that all steve had to focus on was the eulogy, you handled all the prep with some help from your own mother.
you made sure nobody spoke to him for too long. you knew how overwhelmed social interaction could make him, let alone during this rocky period, so whenever you saw someone speaking to him longer than the typical "sorry for your loss, sarah was a great woman" shtick, you swooped in with an excuse to take him away
you were his rock. he swore he fell even more in love with you during that time, because of how much of a support system you were for him and how easy you made things for him.
that being said, you also appreciated his personal space. you knew he needed regular breaks from socializing, even from you, and especially so during a time of great loss and mourning.
after the funeral, you took to sleeping on his couch in the living room. he almost threw you over his shoulder to take you to his bed, but you were adamant on staying downstairs.
"not even the spare room, sweetheart?" steve asked, getting on his knees in front of you while you lay back on the couch.
"no," you insisted. "i know you'll sneak in like the dirty dog you are. i just want you to know that someone you love is right here for you, but i don't want you to feel obliged to talk or even hang out with me."
steve's heart bloomed at your words. truthfully, he didn't want to be all alone in the house. not when he was so used to waking up to the smell of his mom making breakfast, or the sound of her pattering around in her room, or the sight of her standing in the doorway to say goodnight and remind him that she loved him.
"okay, bubby," he sighed, giving in. leaning up, he placed a gentle kiss to your cheek, and then your forehead, and then the tip of your nose. "you sure you won't be scared down here all alone?"
"of course not," you whispered with a smile. "not when i have mr. tibbles to protect me."
steve chuckled at how adorable you looked cuddling the fluffy blue bear he had won you at a carnival the previous summer.
"alright. but come upstairs if you want; don't be scared to wake me up," he said, tightly cupping your chin so you knew he was being serious.
"i know, i will," you promised. "and you can come down here if you need me."
he smiled sweetly before giving you a quick kiss, leaving your lips tingling. "love you, bub."
you leaned forward to kiss him again, keeping your lips close to his after pulling away. "love you more, ste."
his eyes flickered down before he kissed you again, for longer this time. his hand moved to stroke your hair as your tongues glided against each other, pulling soft whimpers from your mouth.
when he pulled away, a genuine smile grew on his face. "good night, pretty girl."
once he was gone, you waited for around an hour to pass before getting up. he'd likely be asleep by then, which meant it was time to go.
for the past week, janice had been an absolute pest.
under the guise of wanting to comfort him, janice relentlessly flirted and touched and threw herself at steve.
at first, you shook off your annoyance, thinking she'd give up once steve rejected her advances a couple of times.
but she didn't. fucking. stop.
the straw that broke the camel's back was when you overheard her offering steve a blowjob the morning of the funeral.
did she have no fucking shame?
you had no choice. you knew she wasn't going to stop. you had given her plenty of chances to realize how disgusting she was being, but there was no self-reflection for someone as sordid as her.
janice had to go.
you tried doing it the hard way. used the tech-y skills steve had taught you to get her her dream internship in canada, after hacking into the company's system and using a fake application you put a lot of effort into.
she rejected it. what the fuck? after all the time you put into making her sound like the best damn intern ever?
okay. so turns out, you had to do it the easy way.
you had watched all 8 seasons of dexter. you had seen american psycho countless times. you and steve spent weekends watching copious amounts of horror movies and true crime documentaries.
you knew how to kill and get away with it.
so that night, you snuck out of steve's home and made your way to christina elemanca's house. her, janice, and four of their other friends were having a sleepover. it was the perfect opportunity.
it took a while to find the golden moment. you staked out the house and kept tabs on their phone use, until they finally ordered a pizza.
christina answered the door. ugh.
but that was your in. because christina forgot to lock the door. see, her hands were so full of pizza that it slipped her mind.
so you slipped inside.
you heard their giggles and melodic voices from the living room. it felt exhilarating to listen in to their conversation like a fly on the wall, being somewhere you most definitely shouldn't have been. the surge of power combined with the taboo nature of your eavesdropping was almost erotic.
they spoke about which guys and girls they were crushing over, steve's name coming up a little too many times for your liking
then, finally, janice needed to pee.
probably from all that gin
you waited until she reached the top floor before following her up.
swinging the unlocked bathroom door open, you smiled widely at her.
she was sitting on the toilet, shorts around her ankles, eyes wide. "you- hic- what are you doing here, y/n? did chris invite you?"
"nope," you replied brightly.
"so what are you doing here?" she slurred, her eyes half shut.
"you're so drunk, it's pathetic," you commented bitterly. "i see you lack self control in pretty much all aspects of your life, then."
"fuck you just say?" she asked with an insulted, whiny tone.
sick of her face and voice, you took hold of her hair and dragged her up to her feet. she was still mid-piss, making you grimace as a few spots of it got on you.
before she could let out a yell and alert the others downstairs to your presence, you turned her around, pushed her down to her knees and stuck her head down the toilet bowl.
her arms thrashed around, but her drunken state had left her too weak to properly fight back.
with gurgles and chokes, she gradually slowed down before her arms fell limp.
she was dead.
you winced when you realized you had just drowned her in her own piss.
"shit," you whispered. "probably should've flushed first. sorry about that, jan."
you dragged her body up before pulling it over to the window and throwing it out into the back garden. then, you rushed downstairs, making sure the girls heard you slam the front door shut.
dragging janice's body through quiet, unsurveilled roads and alleyways to the edge of town, you buried it after taking her phone. some of the girls had texted and called her, asking where she ran off to.
"i'm sorry, guys. a few weeks ago, i realized i want more from life. tonight was the best and i'm so glad we got to spend some girl time together before i left. i didn't tell you about my plan to leave town because i didn't want us to spend our last night together crying and saying goodbye. please don't look for me. i'm living out my dreams. love you girlies forever. xo jan"
was that how girls talked to each other?
there was a minor investigation into her disappearance, but her friends and family corroborated the fact that she had always been a free spirit, too big for this small town.
you got back to steve's house before 2am, took a quick shower and got rid of the clothes and shoes you were wearing that had janice's pissy dna all over them.
the next morning, you woke up to steve sitting on the ground next to the couch, staring up at you.
"morning, bub," he whispered, smiling. "aren't you a sight for sore eyes?"
you smiled back at him, reaching out your hand to cup his cheek. "morning, pretty. sleep well?"
"yep," he answered, but you knew he was lying. he gave your forehead a kiss. "how was your night on the couch?"
"my night was great," you answered truthfully, hugging mr. tibbles close to your chest. "my night was perfect."
