That scene in episode 24 where Ririka’s parents invite Dewey to stay for dinner and he sits there awkwardly, barely touching his food, clearly offput not just by the parents of his former enemy offering him food, but by the entire happy family dynamic and people being nice to him without expecting anything in return or wanting to use him/manipulate him for something…
Everything he went through to get the Black Vaccine to Ririka was, as he said, to repay his “debt”. The transaction was completed, and he left, and yet Ririka still insisted on helping him.
Dewey is, by all means, a kid. He looks to be about the same age as Kanon, who is twelve, so I assume he’s maybe twelve or thirteen. And yet instead of being with his family, he makes his first appearance as part of an evil, planet-killing organization (which, mind you, consists of only men; no women are seen in Dark Joker in the entire show, so it’s highly doubtful that Dewey was born into the organization). Where are his parents? Are they even alive? How long was Dewey in Dark Joker, and how was he recruited in the first place?
(You know, the fact that Dark Joker has a man who can wipe people’s memories doesn’t exactly have good implications, but idk. It would’ve been nice to see the inner workings of Dark Joker a bit more.)
So we’ve got this kid (who’s maybe thirteen at the most) who has already worked his way far up the ranks of Dark Joker by the time the show starts. He commands monsters, he’s incredibly blasé about trying to murder people — honestly, I bet he’s killed people in the past, considering what Dark Joker does…
And then he participates in a normal dinner with a normal, loving family, and he’s clearly so unfamiliar with everything, and you have to wonder whether scheming and violence are all he knows.
I’m probably reading too deeply into this kids’ show, but all the implications of the dinner scene are just so sad to me.
And don’t even get me started on Buros and how there was clearly some fucked up shit going on there
Makes me wish there was an episode that properly explained Dewey’s backstory.
