Thursday, August 29: Dark Moor, "Dragon into the Fire"

“Dragon into the Fire” was incredibly on the nose, but that was probably what Dark Moor had to be if they were to jump into the power metal fray right as Stratovarius and Rhapsody were beginning to take off on the international stage.  As Spain’s main entry into the subgenre, the group went all in on the noodly riffing and keyboards, galloping rhythms and dramatic vocals, though “Dragon into the Fire” was a bit less histrionic than what was coming out of Finland and Italy at the time.  What was immediately apparent at the time was that this sound was aiming for prevalence at least across Europe, if not the globe, and to some extent it felt like the continent was overcorrecting for the rise of nu metal in the US, since this leaned so far towards the other extreme.  But by the same token, it turned out that even if Dark Moor didn’t become as popular as their counterparts (though they had a pretty long run), their approach proved to be the one that outlasted almost all concurrent trends.

Here it is! All of the patches are hand-made (the backpatch was cut out from a t-shirt and everything else I painted on scrap fabric). It's still very much a work in progress, I'm planning on adding more punk and nature-themed patches to the front as well as some extra stuff to fill in the gaps, probably going to be a mix of more spikes and pins and maybe some painted details like leaves and vines

I haven’t done this for a couple years but kept thinking about it throughout 2020 (mainly how much Apocalypse & Chill was going to be the centerpiece for the title alone, and how Unleash the Archers was definitely breaking my “one album per artist” rule because both Apex and Abyss were definitely top 5 on their own if not 1 and 2). Overall my music choices are as metal as ever, but this is probably the first year where the majority of albums on my list were released this year.
