Okay I know this is technically an act, but. I do feel like there's something to be said about how Dark Rockman's idea of friendship is to be so completely subservient to what Netto wants that he neglects to inform him of things that would be helpful to the situation

And yeah, the goal is to get himself arrested, so naturally he causes as much property damage as physically possible under the guise of helping Netto, but like... he doesn't need to do that. He doesn't need to act friendly for his "oh no I've suddenly got a major defect" shtick to work.

You could argue that he wanted it to be as convincing as possible to cause Netto maximum emotional damage, and I'm inclined to say that's part of it, but... he says that his and Rockman's views on friendship are opposites. implying that he does have opinions on the matter, and that his earlier behaviors were based on it.

So, I think it's possible that when he was playing innocent by acting like a friend to Netto, he wasn't. necessarily trying to come across as super eerie??

I mean, think about his plan for a minute. this whole thing banks on him playing the role of Friend well enough for Netto to buy into the idea of a mercy kill - because surely he'd listen more if it really felt like the request was coming from Rockman himself, right? If he acted completely crazy, would Netto even consider that this is something he truly wants?

This guy legit thinks that the only suspicious part of his behavior has been the Literal Crimes he's committed, and that "how could I go against what Netto-kun wants to do" is a normal thing for Rockman to say. Y'know, the guy who's constantly scolding Netto for being irresponsible? That Rockman?? He missed the mark so badly it's almost funny

But it makes sense when you consider that he's probably working under the perspective that Rockman's a "good navi" first and foremost. Netnavis are meant to be helpful programs by design, and a program made to serve doesn't usually ask questions or disobey orders. They just take the most efficient route to complete a task, and even though he deliberately took it too far, everything he did was ultimately for the sake of that efficiency.

Netto wants to get to school faster? Make all the lights green, who cares about the other cars. He needs money for food? Well, there's a bank right there, those have money in them. As illegal and dangerous as his tactics were, you can see how it's something a navi might think to do.

The real Rockman is very good at being a navi, of course. He's polite, patient, always has helpful information to give at the drop of a hat. but Dark Rockman makes you realize just how much more unsettling he would be if he leaned into it too much, and stopped treating himself and Netto like equals.

To summarize - a good navi is different from a good friend, and I love how Dark Rockman exposes the delicate balance that Rockman has to keep up in being both

Darkloid AU

I've been meaning to get this out of my system for a while. So here's a little snippet of a MMBN Darkloid AU idea. It is a little darker than my usual stuff, just a heads-up.

It was a fact that there was no place for humans in the Dark World. Dark Aura didn't infect them; how troublesome.

Beastman sniffed the air. His senses pricked as the tangy, tangible scent of a human drifted on the wind. He rose his head. The beast that he was licked at the power of the Dark Aura. He jumped from his perch on top of the building onto the road below. What was another crack in an already broken road? It didn't matter.

Prey.

Real, human prey. Beastman raced off, galloping on all four limbs. The human scent came closer. He paused. His body quivered. He started to drool. A little human came out of building. Store? House? Didn't matter. So oblivious was his prey. He walked without a care in the world. His hands were in his pockets.

Beastman lunged. A weak hunt but a satisfying kill. The human stepped back before the claws could hit. Beastman skidded to a stop. The human looked at hm, and chuckled. Beastman didn't care.

'Hunt!'

The Dark Aura fueled him. He swung his claws around, ready to pierce, ready to tear. The boy skipped backwards. Beastman's claws grazed his arm. Not even enough to draw blood. The human landed, and removed an odd device from his belt.

"My brother doesn't like it when people hurt me." Brother hah!

"I like it!" Beastman howled. He sprinted at full speed, ready to slice the human boy between his two sets of claws. A lithe figure got between his claws and the human. A hand gripped each set of claws. Beastman stared. This Darkloid was different. There were dark circles under his eyes, his face was pale and oddly human. He smiled while his red eyes narrowed into rage. Beastman smelt his opponent's strength too late.

"You hurt my Lan." The human slid in two chips of some sort into his device. They flared with Dark Aura and the Darkloid's arms morphed.

"DarkAuraFist, times two." the human said, calmly. Beastman's claws shattered. He howled. The human slid in another chip. "DarkVaribleSword." Beastman stepped back. He tripped over a piece of rubble. How, how insulting! He was a Darkloid! The little Darkloid licked his lips. He was ready to savour the kill. Beastman swallowed his pride.

"I yield, I yield! You're the better hunter!" The beast that he was shrank away, cowering to the one stronger than him. The Darkloid huffed a laugh. A blade appeared on his arm. Beastman lurched away. Too late. The Darkloid stabbed him right through his crest. The Darkloid stared at him. His smile spread wider. Beastman sensed anger and rage.

"We're Darkloids. We don't show mercy." Beastman howled and writhed as his data vanished away. The Darkloid pulled his blade back. He looked back at the human. "Are you alright, Lan?" he asked. From the middle of his blurred mind, Beastman noted that his fist was clenched. The Darkloid was ready to punch him. The human spun his arm around.

"Eh, nothing bad. He wreaked my shirt though." he said. The Darkloid didn't punch him. Beastman's sensed flitted away.

"Well that's a problem. Don't worry, I'll find a good one."

"Anything I want?" "Of course, Lan. Anything for my little brother."

Humans couldn't be infected with the Dark Aura.

Beastman knew it was a lie too late.
