“Didn’t figure you would come up with this one,” said Cole as he tossed another bread piece into the pond. A peculiarly large duck took note of it instantly and bobbed into the water for it.
Marlise chuckled, crouching down to observe the creature. “I have to get you out of the house somehow. And who can resist ducks? You should be thanking me.”
Cole rolled his eyes, letting a smirk settle on his face. He watched as the angel neared closer to the water.
“They’re… cute,” he admitted, throwing a piece on the grass this time. The little babies hoarded the bread, quacking incessantly, picking at it. When he looked back up, Marlise was already knee deep in the water. Her leg swished back and forth in it, but she didn’t even make a ripple.
“I used to be scared of lakes. Can you believe that?” she mumbled, nostalgia thick in her voice. “I couldn’t even swim. I’d sink like a rock, and my granddad would have to help me back up. It’s funny, in hindsight.”
Then she sat down, facing her counterpart with a tired smile, letting the ducks paddle around and phase through her.
Cole was about to say something, but opted for the strangely comforting silence. He sat down by the bank, and the two remained content.
