Hello, Peter! Merry Christmas! I made these things for you. The circles are crayons, and the little squares are things that you can put into the microwave [this word is scribbled out and rewritten a few times] and they warm up your hands! I hope you like them!

In all seriousness, though, the gift Peter finds in his little post office box is so unconventional and clever that at first, he doesn't even know what they are. Not even prising them carefully from their holdings (could he use that to make tiny cupcakes? The thought crossed his mind, anyway) and flipping them around in his waxy-tipped fingers helped him figure it out. And that was how he figured out most of anything!
Luckily for him he read the accompanying letter before thinking they might actually be cupcakes. No, no, Sea, these are definitely crayons, and not the product of Heike going a little overboard with food colouring. He scribbled across the card a bit just to know for sure, and a massive grin lit up his face when it turns out true.
As for the handwarmers? Those are much less a mystery, but Peter swings his feet happily and presses one to either side of his face all the same.
And everyone bustling about the post office is much too busy-dizzy to pay a silly little boy much mind, so, lucky him!
