The next book I’m reading for my book club is the biography of Darnell L. Moore, about his experiences growing up in Camden New Jersey and how they’ve shaped who he is today. 

It’s a book I’d never pick up personally; I’m not the biggest fan of biographies and with it being about a black gay man, there’s not a whole lot I connect with and can relate to here. But it’s eye opening for a straight white woman like myself who never gave a lot of thought to what POC and LGBTQ+ people experience. People just trying to live their lives like the rest of us but coming up short because of a society and government that’s stacked against them. 

I’m in the middle of his story and look forward to finishing the rest.

An apology...

Dear Friends,

In the past few days, I know that I've been the subject of a heated controversy in the community because of a recent article I wrote on my website. I decided not to respond to the discussion until now because I wanted to wait until Darnell Moore had an opportunity to speak, which he did this afternoon on Facebook.

First, let me say that I have the utmost respect and admiration for Darnell, and I would never intentionally do anything to hurt, harm or offend him. Intentions, however, are not sufficient if the effect is still harmful. So let me take this opportunity to right a wrong.

I sincerely apologize to Darnell for the hurt or harm my article has caused. In addition, I have seen and read that many other people in the community are offended by what I wrote, and to those of you, I apologize as well.

Ten years ago, in December 2007, I shut down my personal blog and disengaged from day-to-day LGBTQ news to focus my attention primarily on national politics. I had no intention to re-engage in any public way until last month when someone sent me Darnell's article.

I began drafting a response on December 16 last year, and on that same day I sent a message to Darnell to tell him, with a promise to send the completed piece to him when I finished. Three days later, on December 19, I sent him the entire article and asked for his permission to publish it. He thanked me for sending it to him and told me, "We certainly need more dialogue. Go for it."

I chose a purposefully provocative opening to the article to parallel the provocative style of the opening in Darnell's own piece. The difference, of course, is that he was writing about anonymous subjects of affection, and I was writing about a real person. In my piece, I attempted to describe an imaginary consensual sexual encounter. I also tried — and apparently failed — to use this imaginary story to illustrate the point that our deepest, most personal lustful thoughts need not necessarily lead to action.

Darnell and I have texted and emailed one another in the past month about the writing and publication of my piece, but I do not think that either one of us anticipated the reaction that it has generated. I still believe in the message I tried to communicate, and some of the responses I received that condemned me for my imaginary thoughts demonstrate exactly why I feel queer people can be led to feel shame for their most personal desires.

Nevertheless, in the context of today's movement against sexual assault, my piece felt out of place. I have been a vocal critic of Donald Trump and failed Alabama Senate candidate Roy Moore for their sexual misconduct. And, although, I have never sexually assaulted anyone, my article gave some people the misimpression that my imaginary consensual encounter was descriptive of a sexual assault fantasy. This was definitely not my intention, which is why I wrote in the article that I would never engage in any such behavior without consent.

But, as I indicated earlier, intentions are not sufficient if the effect is still harmful. I learned long ago that building and protecting valuable relationships are more important than defending your position in a debate. With that in mind, I have decided to remove the article from my website and to issue this public apology. I hope that Darnell, and those in the community, will find a way to accept this apology.

Finally, let me say this. We live in a moment where people in the communities I care about are under constant attack. We may not always agree, but we need each other as brothers and sisters right now, and I hope we can find a way to move forward in the spirit of love.
