African darters
two common log perch individuals
percina darters are SO cool & I wish I could see all of them
A Banded Darter (Etheostoma zonale), looking a little glum while being photographed. Southwest Ohio, 04/13/23.
Wake up babe new hobby just dropped.
(I've gotten into dip netting and now I'm a little bit obsessed with darters.)

So there have been a few new additions to the fish tank. The creek near my house dried out and all the fish trapped in a shrinking puddle went into my porch bucket.
Most of the shiners died anyways they either jumped out or got eaten by the 2 little long ear sunfish. There are three darters left that I brought inside to the 20 gallon after realizing that at least one of the fish was predating on the others.
Honestly I was moving them quickly trying to keep them alive sice they were essentially trapped in a mud puddle. So they went straight into the bucket no counting no species id-ing nothing.
The darters are now healthy and impossible to catch. But the sunfish are back in the larger river.
So now there's 3 native fish in my tank. Two enjoy the tong feeding and one would rather just pick off snails. So they seem like they'll be thriving even if I can't get them netted to save my life!!
World's luckiest sunfish. Saved from the August sun and dropped into a buffet with two feedings of fish food a day and all the little fish he could eat going back to the river. Yes he looks distorted by the jar and the wierd lighting but it's the best photo of him!
Tangerine Darter
First sketch of 2024, in honor of a particular fish-loving friend.
May the year be kind, bring much good knowledge, and smooth adjustments to all finding themselves in new habitats.
