Day 86#: Elegant Firefish
Today's animal of the day is the Elegant Firefish (Nemateleotris decora)!

Also known as the purple firefish, this species of dartfish is native to the waters of the Indo-Pacific and can be commonly found in coral reefs around the islands of Mauritius, Samoa, New Caledonia, and the Ryukyu Islands of Japan. They are often found in pairs, as mated individuals tend to be monogamous, and typically live in sandy patches with lots of holes in the sea floor for them to hide in when threatened by a potential predator. Their diet consists of plankton, copepods, and crab larvae.

Because of their colorful appearance and relatively docile nature, these fish are fairly common in the saltwater aquarium hobby. As long as the tank is large enough and they're given plenty of places to hide, these fish get along pretty well with other species. Though they are known to jump a lot, so if you do plan on keeping them, make sure you get a tank with a lid on it so they don't jump out of the tank and suffocate. You should also make sure to get your fish from an ethical source, since many saltwater fish sold in captivity are wild-caught. Luckily, this particular species is capable of spawning in captivity, which marine biologists hope will help reduce the amount of fish that are taken from the wild.

Darts are powerful for their size, hence sometimes they’re called the poor man’s permit. Not as difficult to get a bite from though, just strip fast, real fast and they just cannot resist chasing down your clouser. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ #flyfishing #maldives #maldivesfishing #maldivesflyfishing #flyfishingasia #scissortaildartfish #dartfish #sportfishingasia #seaurchincharters www.FlyFishin.Asia
Hey do you want to see another marine fish I think is super neat?
That there is the Lined Dartfish (Ptereleotris grammica) and I think it is just the most handsome looking dartfish I ever did see.
Other members of the Ptereleotris genus are more commonly seen in the aquarium trade, namely the Zebra Dartfish (P. zebra) and the Sissortail Dartfish (P. evides), and they are also very neat. But that Lined Dartfish is where my hearts at.
Look at the jovial contrast of blue and yellow. That’s the good stuff right there.
What little I can find on their care is similar to other Ptereleotris species. They get to 10cm (4 inched or so), and generally are seen in pairs. Shy and peaceful, they do best in a tank with other peaceful, diminutive fish and plenty of space.
