Deputy constable fired for confrontation with Nordstrom Rack customers

An off-duty constable has been fired for his actions toward two shoppers that were caught on video outside a north Indianapolis store.

Two men were shopping at their local Nordstrom Rack in Indianapolis, Indiana, when they noticed unusual scrutiny from security guard Daryl Jones. When they left with their bags he followed them outside, and when started to drive off he “screamed he was going to run our plates.” So instead of leaving, they circled back around to find out what the problem was. Jones immediately demanded to see some identification.

When the men objected and asked why Jones wanted their ID, he retorted, “Because you want to run your mouth.” When they asked again, he declared, “I’m stopping you because you’re suspicious.” When they said he had no right to detain them, he shouted, “I got my rights to do anything I want to do, I’m a police officer!” He then threatened to arrest them and tow their car: “Get your driver’s license out now or I will lock you up.”

Although Jones never provided his name or badge number, he was indeed an off-duty officer with the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department, and he even called for backup. When the second officer arrived, he spoke with Jones for a few minutes, and then finally told the two men they could leave: “as far as I’m concerned, you guys are good to go.”

Unfortunately for Jones, one of the unarmed African-American (you guessed!) men recorded everything on his mobile phone, and posted the video. The IMPD fired Jones (yes, he’s white) within two hours of seeing the video. Jones also no longer works for Nordstrom Rack security.
