An Alaska/Horizon decelerates on 16R at Seattle-Tacoma- note the deployed spoilers. ⁣ ⁣ The powerful Pratt & Whitney Canada PW150 engine of the Bombardier Q400 began as a demonstrator engine called the ADS-604. This demonstrator engine was sort of an in-house laboratory for PWC to test out new engine technologies. When the PW100 series engines were launched in 1979 based on what the company had learned on the ADS-604 program, it was initially designated PT7A as it was intended to be an improved and advanced follow on to the iconic PT6A turboprop engine. ⁣ ⁣ One of the reasons PWC launched the PT7A (later redesignated the PW100 series) was the advent of advanced metallurgy and high end computer simulations that would allow early computational fluid dynamics that weren’t around when the PT6A was designed. ⁣ ⁣ The turboprop operator community was also looking for improvements in fuel consumption, more than what a scaled up PT6A could provide. The ADS-604 engine program was re-oriented to support the PT7A development effort with the first flight testing taking place in 1982 on the company’s Vickers Viscount testbed aircraft. ⁣ ⁣ The PW100 series engines span in range from the PW118 producing 1,800 hp for the Embraer EMB120 Brasilia all the way up to the PW150 producing 4,580 hp for the Bombardier Q400. ⁣ ⁣ As I had posted before, the PW150 is a major growth upgrade for the PW100 series engine- the previous engine variant in the family was the PW127 which produced 2,700 to 2,900 hp for the ATR family of turboprop airliners, so the leap to the PW150 was very significant. ⁣ ⁣ The basic PW150 design is capable of producing as much as 7,500 hp and the turbine takes 75% more airflow than previous PW100 series engines. ⁣ ⁣ #Bombardier #Dash8 #Q400 #Alaska #HorizonAir #AlaskaAirlines #Seattle #SeaTac #KSEA #SEA #Washington⁣ ⠀⁣ #instagramaviation #splendid_transport #instaaviation #aviationlovers #aviationphotography #flight ⠀⁣ ⁣ #AvGeeksAero #AvgeekSchoolofKnowledge #AvGeekNation (at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport) https://www.instagram.com/p/CEYICB2Ba08/?igshid=16lnch9twkz5r
