secret salamander and the johns commercial
10 years ago, Dashan Coram (Shed Some Skin) recorded a 2-CD compilation featuring 46 songs by 46 artists. It is now streaming on bandcamp here: http://luv-a-lot.bandcamp.com/ Artists include Toby Goodshank, Schwervon!, Thomas Patrick Maguire, Herman Dune, Jeffrey Lewis, and Langhorne Slim.
Dashan Coram was a musical inspiration and dear friend to many. He passed away this spring, and left behind a huge collection of music he wrote and recorded, but his Secret Salamander record "Shed Some Skin" was his last, beautiful, weird, incredible gift to us. We need to share it with you. Please take a look at the kickstarter and donate whatever you can!
Urban Barnyard - The Whale Room Whale's Big Vacation
Jay Sharp with Martin Luque on drums
performing Reknown, one take, no run through or rehearsal. In true Dashan fashion. This would make the song charming or cute or something, right D? ;-)
I feel kinda broken about posting this one.
The lyrics had to do with visions of demons and goat heads as Dashan and I had talked about. Subsequently, it became one of his favorite songs of mine.
DASHAN CORAM>>>1981 to 2012.RIP...I Love This Song
I love this song 'Put the Cookie Down' from Huggabroomstick's 2004 album. I think i must have first met Dashan in 2002 or 2003 both at Fort Awesome and at the Side Walk Cafe...Where lot's of the anti folk crew were in the pocket with more traditional singer songwriter material, Dashan was someone who wanted to see danger and energy on stage, both in performance, song writing and sonic vision..Huggabroomstick were so cool... i remember seeing them play this song in the basement at Fort Awesome and was instantly hooked...the repetitive monolithic message 'put the cookie down' repeated over and over with a raw 60's style riff and fuzz bass...this band was cool...they still are...Dashan left the band i think a few years ago.... but anyway...Dashan was a link to a variety of nyc music scene's...a compilation he produced in 2003 or 04' was a definitive scene document...i recorded a track at his house, and it was one of the first times i felt like someone 'gave a shit' about my action.... he knew how to record with his digital 16 track unit and he would invite his friends over to do it...he always said his 'dream band' was one that had the full on rock n roll hooks and then free caterwaul assault on the other side...all 360' degrees of music in one sound....
i dont have much more to say, except the world lost a very special individual dedicated to music and art and friends and passion....and i am truly saddened by this unexpected and tragic death...
we will all miss him.
WE all love you Dashan....
