Do u regret Dashcon
Do I regret going? No. For all it’s ludicrousness I had a good time and met some really cool people. While it WAS a clusterfuck, a lot of what people said happened never actually DID happen. I had a couple really great panels we ran, and I got to spend some fun time with my best friend.
Ultimately the con failed because of gross incompetence and the typical tumblr drama pervading the con management team. So while I don’t really regret going, I think it was definitely something I would not repeat.
Hey! Do you know how many px the gab between two gifs is now? The new dimensions keep confusing me...
Uhhhhhhhhhhhh. I think it's 4px? But idk, the dimensions are technically: 540px wide full length (although tumblr still has the limit set to 500px, so if you upload a 540px wide image/gif, it will resize it and then stretch it to fit the 540px, idefk). Then for two gifs in a row it's 268px each wide. For three in a row, it should technically be 177.3, because 540 doesn't divide evenly (sigh) but you can't do that so it's 177px each and it leaves and ugly 1px white gap on the right.
This should help: New Photoset Dimensions.
are you making gifs to the new size dimensions or sticking to the old ones
Currently I'm not making any gifs at all, precisely because it's too much of a mess to figure out. I'm kind of hoping they'll somehow decide to do something about it (lol haha) but I may cave on Sunday, since TWD is doing an episode that is 100% about my favorite character. I guess if nothing has changed by then I'll use the new sizes, but I'm not sure?
It would help if the new sizes made sense (like, 177.3?? what??), and if tumblr wasn't all "well the new dash size is 540px, but if you upload an image that is 540px we're going to resize it to 500px, then upload it, then have it stretch to fit the 540px dash post size, because reasons". Which essentially means there's no way to make a full-width gif that looks good.
Sorry if somebody asked this already, but now when I'm making edits, should I make them 500 or 540px? I know they've changed the post size, but I saw somebody said something about it still needing to be 500px to post or ??? I'm just confused as to what to do now
I'm honestly not sure. The problem is that even when you uploaded 540px images, it would resize the image down to 500px (because they somehow still have it set as the limit) and post it. Then on the dashboard, even though the image was re-sized down to 500px, it would be stretched to fit the 540px post width.
I just tested and it's still doing that. If you upload a 540px image, it'll look blurry on the dash because of the resizing. You can click to see the fullsize image (like you've always been able to do, if say, you upload a big 1000px image and it resizes it for the dash), but the version that shows on the dashboard/in your blog has been sized down to 500px and then stretched to fit the 540px layout.
As an example: Here is the picture as tumblr uploaded it on my dashboard, and here is the version I see if I click it to pop-up the "fullsize" version (aka the real size).
As for what to do, I have no idea. It's kinda a lose/lose situation right now.
Here's the last I'm gonna say about this for a bit: If it doesn't bother you that gifs are resized, that's fine. If it does bother you, that's also fine. But stop trying to tell people how they should feel, if they feel opposite of you. No one is going around tell you that you should be more upset, so stop telling people that they SHOULDN'T be upset. People are allowed to feel the way they want to feel. No one has any right to tell people they 'shouldn't' feel a certain way, let alone that they should "get over it". It doesn't matter if it's a "minor thing" to you, it is probably not to the other person. Different things are important to different people. Accept it. Move on. If it bothers you that much that other people are upset, then just unfollow them. Don't argue with them, and especially don't send rude messages demanding they change the way they feel.
And also, people sending rude anons to me about this now, you're just getting ignored and blocked, so please don't bother.
feministstree replied to your post: “please don't feel like your gifs are ruined, i think they all look perfect! honestly i can't see any difference in quality. i PROMISE you, yours and everyone else's hard work has not been wasted, and when you post new stuff, it'll still look amazing”:
Really. I can't see much difference. We people who don't know the intricacies of such things are not able to recognise the difference.
I understand that but the point is, some people can see it, and it upsets us. I don't think you're trying to imply that we shouldn't be bothered because it looks fine to some people, but other people are trying to say or imply that, and it's very frustrating. I, and anyone else who notices a difference, should be allowed to be frustrated and bothered, you know?
please don't feel like your gifs are ruined, i think they all look perfect! honestly i can't see any difference in quality. i PROMISE you, yours and everyone else's hard work has not been wasted, and when you post new stuff, it'll still look amazing <3
Thank you for this message, Nonny, it's very sweet. But the thing is, my graphics do look different to me, and many graphic makers feel the same way. We can see the way they're stretched and blurry, we can see how the text is harder to read. When you've spent ages working hard on graphics, learning how to edit and sharpen and color perfectly, you notice these things. Not only do we notice it, but it understandably bothers us, considering how much work so many of us have put into it. It does feel like a waste to us, and it's important that we're allowed to feel rightfully upset about it.
It's also okay for us to be upset about the new sizes, to be frustrated about having to change all our new gifs to sizes that are not only weird and uneven (I mean seriously why would you choose a post width that doesn't divide evenly??), but also make us wonder if the sizes won't just change again, if tumblr decides to randomly make the dashboard even wider, or smaller. That isn't fair, and the fact that it feels like the tumblr staff don't even care also isn't fair.
