velvet ant! in NE
Oh that's awesome! That species is ...
Red Velvet Ant aka Cow Killer (Dasymutilla occidentalis), female, family Mutillidae
This is actually not an ant at all, but it actually a species of wasp. The females are wingless, and thus resemble large furry ants.
They have an extremely painful sting!

Dasymutilla gloriosa. Thistledown Velvet Ant. Elizabeth Garcia who took this picture claimed this one creeped her out. ... and she sees a lot of wasps and bees. Not an ant, but a wasp. This it the wingeless female collected by Tim McMahon in Cochise County in Arizona. Desert. Check out the nice crisp arrays of white hairs when you look at the picture full screen. Ask yourself..."what does it want?"
Found an eastern velvet ant (Dasymutilla occidentalis) and spent two minutes chasing her with the camera and got at least two decent pictures, cropped for better viewing because she is, well, an ant and tiny.
[ID: Two square-cropped photos of a velvet ant walking through grass. It is a wingless female wasp with a very fuzzy orange and black body, with an orange head, orange thorax, black legs and antenne, and an abdomen striped orange, black, and orange. She shines in the sunlight. End ID.]
Feeling random tonight. Here are some Mutillids with shades, cause they're cool.
Dasymutilla gloriosa that I drew in 2017. Love these wasps!
Also, there should totally be a wasp emoji. I'm still waiting..... *crossed arms and taps foot*
This is not a completed piece of art. I plan on drawing more cool wasps and eventually making a poster. I've just been going through a hard time recently, and I haven't had as much inspiration. Depression is hitting me a bit. Here are all the ones I've done so far. If anyone has a suggestion for a very obscure, specific, and weird wasp, let me know! You might spark my inspiration and motivation!
